Service Overview

The Derbyshire Recovery and Peer Support Service provides practical, goal-based 1-1 support to help individuals develop tools to manage their mental health independently within the community. The service also supports a network of peer led support groups across the county, providing each group with an individualised package of funding, training, and ongoing development support.

Rethink Mental Illness along with our partners P3, The Derbyshire Federation for Mental Health and our new partner for this contract, Derbyshire Mind, have been able to retain the recommissioned Derbyshire Recovery and Peer Support Service from April 2023, which will continue to provide practical, goal-based 1-1 and telephone support to help individuals develop the tools to manage their mental health independently within the community. The service will also continue to support a network of peer led groups across the county, providing each group with an individualised package of startup funding, training, and ongoing developmental support towards self-sustainability.

The practical, goal-based support remains open to self-referrals and referrals made on behalf of somebody else and will aim to help individuals to develop the tools personally required to manage their mental health in a self-sufficient way, with everyone developing a personalised support plan to work towards with an allocated mental health recovery worker.

The groups that the service supports are all peer led and aim to provide a safe space for those with moderate to medium mental health issues. The groups are open to all and as they don’t offer counselling, they aim through peer support to help members find and share ways to cope, helping to maintain individuals’ wellbeing. The groups can be a community, informal friendships, or constituted group decided on by the group members themselves.

We will carry on with delivering wellbeing hubs across Derbyshire that are free and open to anyone over the age of 18. These hubs are staff led and are there for individuals to drop into and chat confidentially for support on what is affecting their wellbeing, look at practical options to get them on the right path to where they need to be as well as appropriate signposting.

As part of the new Derbyshire Recovery and Peer Support Service contract we have been commissioned to develop the voluntary element of the Living Well service in Derbyshire, which will bring about a new way of delivering mental health support in collaboration with the NHS. Living Well will ensure that support focuses on the whole person’s needs and can be easily accessed. The VCSE Living Well Service will include Peer Support Workers and Wellbeing Coaches. Both these roles will support individuals in the community to work towards goal focused outcomes to improve their mental health, the Peer Support Workers are bringing their own lived experience and will use this experience to support others. This new workforce will work alongside the Community Mental Health Teams and Adult Social Care to ensure that individuals accessing the Living Well service receive holistic and person-centred care.

ABOUT THE PEER/VOLUNTEER-LED SUPPORT GROUPS:

The groups are peer and volunteer-led and aim to support those with moderate to medium mental health issues or those who can moderate their behaviour during the group session.

The groups are open to all; however, certain values must be adhered to, and members must be in control of themselves, meaning the groups have a zero-tolerance for, aggressive behaviours, drugs, and alcohol while at the groups.

New members can be supported by a carer or healthcare professional in the first instance and on an ongoing basis if found helpful.

The groups can be a community, informal friendships, or constituted group.

  • The groups support those with moderate to medium mental health issues or those who can moderate their behaviour during the session.
  • The groups can aim to help members maintain their own well-being levels by sharing similar lived experiences.
  • Alternatively, they can be about distraction, diversion, interruption, or respite, as in an art group.
  • This sharing/distraction enables members to give a unique quality of mutual support.
  • It enables members to share and swap skill sets.
  • Groups are peer and volunteer led.
  • The groups do not offer to counsel.
  • The groups also have access to local support information and signposting options.
  • The groups aim to help members find new ways to cope to help maintain individual wellbeing.
  • The groups ethos is to offer a forum to show kindness and give hope.

The Ilkeston Bipolar and Personality Disorders Network has successfully reopened. The first session was very well attended which was great to see and everyone said how wonderful it was to have something like this in Ilkeston. The facilitator was very happy with how the first session went, she had lots of informative fact sheets and supportive information to share with the group members. They were all happy to share their coping techniques and strategies, as well as life stories. The group runs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. Contact the Group Development Workers for more Information on how to access these sessions.
