CHURCH OPEN TO REMEMBER THE PEOPLE OF UKRAINE

Misterton Parish Church is open on Sundays and Wednesdays (10.00am to 4.00pm) for residents to call in and have some quiet time for contemplation about, and pray for, the situation in Ukraine. We hope that the position is resolved without more loss of life, and those affected can find places of safety in a peaceful resolution. Votive candles are available— they are traditionally lit as a focus for prayer.

MOTORISTS WARNED OF NEW MOBILE PHONE LAWS

Notts Police has warned motorists that new laws, which come into effect this month, restrict drivers’ use of mobile phones while behind the wheel. The new laws state that motorists cannot check notifications; unlock their devices; make, receive, or reject a phone or internet-based call; or send, receive, or upload oral or written content. Other prohibited actions include: drafting a text message; accessing stored data, such as books, audio files, photos, videos, films, playlist, notes, or messages, accessing the internet, or using a device’s camera.

Drivers will face a £200 fine and six points on their licence from Friday 25 March when the new laws come into force. Road users will still be able to make use of   devices’ satellite navigation features, as long as they are properly secured in a cradle or appropriate holder.

BOWLS CLUB HOLDS ‘OPEN DAY’

Ever considered playing bowls? Anyone coming out of lockdown and interested in taking up a new activity in pleasant company is invited to come along to see what Misterton Bowls Club has to offer.

The Club is holding an open day on Saturday 23 April between 2.00-4.00pm; the Club’s base is on Misterton’s Sports Field. No experience or equipment is necessary but please wear flat shoes. If you’re new to the game and want to build up confidence before playing in a team, join as a social member and play in the Club’s friendly ‘roll-ups’ until you feel more confident.

Experienced bowlers are also welcome. All members are able to play in league teams on a rota basis. How many matches you play depends on the time you want to commit to the game. The Club plays in three leagues; the majority of matches are in the evening between late April and early September.

There are no age restrictions. While it was once thought of an activity for the older generation, it has become a popular sport for all ages. Bowls is for everyone—and as a non-contact sport, you will often find children playing with parents or even grandparents. So come along to the open day and find out more!

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: SERVICES OPEN

Bassetlaw Action Centre’s office is open for enquiries from 9.00am to 1.00pm (with an answerphone outside of these times). BAC is continuing to provide:

  • community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
  • Befriending and Housing Advice services, which are telephone-based
  • the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) will be delivered through Zoom
  • the Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support (but no group activities, unfortunately – they are temporarily suspended)
  • Home Support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service).

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people.

BAC’s priority is to stop the spread of the virus and to encourage people to stay at home, wherever possible. Staff encourage anyone needing any help or at risk of social isolation to contact them on 01777 709650 or by e-mail (enquiries@actioncentre.org.uk) as they are working with a range of key partners to provide help and support where needed. Further information can be found on the website: www.bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk.

UNITED BENEFICE FORMED WHILE SEARCH FOR NEW VICAR CONTINUES

The parishes of Beckingham, Clayworth, Gringley, Misterton, and West Stockwith have had the formal approval of Southwell’s Bishop’s Council to combine as a united benefice—the Oswaldbeck Benefice. In line with the proposal submitted to Bishop’s Council, elections to the united council will be held at the next Annual Parochial Church Meetings in April and May.

Meanwhile, the search for a new vicar continues. The parishes of the Oswaldbeck Benefice have submitted to the Diocese their Benefice Profile, which describes the parishes and the sort of person they want to fill the clergy vacancy. The Archdeacon leading the recruitment has asked for a representative from each parish to form an    interview panel—and there will be an event when all church council members and others can meet the applicant(s). A possible interview date is in May; further details will follow.
