DON’T PARK ON THE PAVEMENT! (+ PIC)
Misterton Parish Council is urging drivers not to park their vehicles on pavements.
Pavements are for pedestrians! And mobility scooters, and people pushing prams. Parking across the pavement is particularly difficult for people with failing vision or who are blind. Vehicles that are causing an obstruction can be reported to the Police - so please park with care and don’t obstruct the pavement.
PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG!
People walking and exercising their dog in the village – and particularly on the old school field (behind the Library and Youth Centre) – are asked to pick up their dog's mess and not leave dog faeces. The old school field has seen an increase in dog fouling and Youth Club members are having to pick up umpteen amounts before using the area for activities!
Bassetlaw District Council will continue to target irresponsible dog owners, who fail to clean up after their pets, after councillors agreed to a renewal of the district-wide Public Spaces Protection (Dog Control) Orders (PSPO). Dog owners in the district are required to pick up their dog’s faeces on any land to which the public have access. An offence under the PSPO is liable for a fine of up to £1000 or a fixed penalty notice of £100. The full policy can be found at www.bassetlaw.gov.uk – search in September’s news archive.
The old school field is used for a range of activities, including the annual village Gala, and for family events such as celebrating the late Queen's diamond jubilee, the accession of King Charles 3, and the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. So please pick up after your dog or this area could become subject to a ban on dogs, like other play areas in the village.
Bagged dog deposits can be put in the black public waste bins: there's one outside the old school site, one outside the butcher's shop, and also on Jubilee Garden. So not far to walk!
BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE
Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:
- community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
- housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
- a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
- the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
- Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
- home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)
- minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.
BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.
For further details on any of the above please contact BAC on 01777 709650 or by e-mail (enquiries@actioncentre.org.uk). Further information can be found on the website: www.bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk.

VILLAGE HALL: USE IT OR LOSE IT!
West Stockwith Parish Council, which runs the Village Hall, is looking for more people to use it or risk losing it. The Hall can accommodate groups like fitness classes, coffee mornings, social events, birthday parties – and more. Speak to any member of the Parish Council if you’d like a booking.
GRANTS FROM LOCAL BENEFACTOR
If you are going to turn 65 or 80 before Christmas 2024 or have children of primary school age, who did not receive a grant in 2023, please get in touch with the Clerk to the Huntington’s Charity.
The Charity is from a legacy bequeathed to the village by William Huntington, a local ship builder in the 18th century, who died in 1714. At Christmas, grants are awarded to people over the age of 65 (people over 80 receive an enhanced grant) and children of primary school age. Although the trustees try hard to keep their records up-to-date, there are always some people of whom they are unaware. Individual grants are also available to people living in the village to help with unforeseen expenses, such as assistance with travel to hospital to visit a sick relative, or for books and equipment for students in apprenticeships and both Higher and Further Education. Applications for grants should be made by letter to the Clerk at Laburnum House, Main Street, West Stockwith, or e-mail the Clerk (huntingtonscharity@hotmail.co.uk).
