STAR WARS EVENT - MAY THE 4TH BE WITH YOU!
Misterton Parish Council is organising a family fun day and picnic on Sunday 4 May - with a Star Wars theme. Come along to the old school field between 2.00-6.00pm for a free family event. What's on offer? BYO picnic or pre-order from Sarah's Sweet Treats or buy on the day (www.facebook.com/sarahssweettreats29) and bring your own chairs, rugs, etc. There will be live music by The Giant Hogweed, and a bar with special Star Wars-style drinks by the White Hart, West Stockwith. There’s a fancy dress competition for children and adults – but costumes should be homemade from recycled materials, not shop bought. The Parish Council has booked Stormtroopers (but they're all volunteers so may not be available). In any event, there’s a Space Agent stilt-walker.
At 4.00pm, there will be presentation of the Parish Council's Village Champion awards, and there’s a grand raffle with proceeds going to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. Parking is limited with preference given to disabled drivers. If there are any queries, call The Misterton Centre on 890646.
STEP BENEFITS
The full, predicted economic benefits of the UK’s prototype fusion energy powerplant (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production, known as STEP) to be built at West Burton have been revealed for the first time. Local councillors are fighting to ensure some of these benefits are felt by local populations.
An economic impact assessment gives an insight into the potential benefits of this world-class project. It covers a timeframe of more than 45 years, from when planning began in 2019, through to 2065. The majority of these benefits are expected to be from 2030 onwards. Benefits include:
more than 6500 jobs a year could benefit Nottinghamshire residents at the peak of operations
Nottinghamshire’s economy could be boosted by between £86m and £210m each year, for the next 40 years.
As well as the STEP fusion facility, a skills centre and a business park are planned.
The report identifies other key benefits for Nottinghamshire, including a forecasted annual average of more than 1000 new construction-related jobs, which will boost the county’s economy by £86m each year. Meanwhile, the number of operational jobs due to be created is predicted to be around 2760 each year, which will bring an average annual economic boost worth £210m for Nottinghamshire.

VE DAY COMMEMORATION
West Stockwith Parish Council is organising a special coffee morning to mark the day, 80 years ago, that Victory in Europe (VE) was declared. On Thursday 8 May at 10.00am, there will be a coffee morning in the Village Hall with tea, coffee, and cakes. All are welcome to honour those who fought for our freedom.
PARISH COUNCIL’S ANNUAL ASSEMBLY
The Parish Council held its Parish Assembly on Thursday 10 April when Vice-chair, Cllr Mark Beecroft, presented a summary of Council activities in 2024/25. It had been a busy year for the Parish Council in terms of completing a number of projects that have been in discussion for a while. The year also saw the retirement of the Clerk, Dave Harford, and the Council thanked him for all his efforts in not just normal duties but also the extras he did for the village. His work was rewarded with a Bassetlaw Achievers Award, which was well deserved. A replacement Clerk had been found and the Council welcomed Clare to the role.
The Parish Council continued to run the allotments and the Village Hall and strides were made to get new regular activities into the Hall to continue its life as a parish facility. Alongside the grass cutting, the Council joined forces with Misterton to employ a lengthsman, who can be seen regularly round the village clearing and tidying and working on improvements. Next, the Parish Council holds the Annual Parish Meeting on Thursday 8 May at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.
