PLATINUM JUBILEE EVENTS: A TRIBUTE TO THE QUEEN (pic)

Four days of events matched those the Queen was due to attend, starting with lighting the beacon on Jubilee Garden. The beacon was specially made for the occasion with the basket constructed by local farrier, Jed Hallam, from disused horseshoes. The bugle call was played by Fiona Law, the Parish Church's organist, on the clarinet, in a duo with Parish Councillor Ian Keat. The beacon lighting was followed by the Jubilee Choir singing Song for the Commonwealth - with the hundreds of residents around the junction of High Street, Wharf Road, and Station Street joining in the National Anthem to conclude the evening's event.

The beacon lighting was followed by a Civic Service of thanksgiving for the 70 years of the Queen’s service on Friday 3 June, a race night on Saturday 4 June, and a Family Picnic on Sunday 5 June. The Platinum Pudding competition was won by Claire Taylor. Many thanks to the Parish Council’s Events Working Group for organising the tribute to the Queen, and to those residents and local businesses that supported the programme of activities.

MISTERTON GALA – BACK AFTER ENFORCED BREAK

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: SERVICES OPEN

Bassetlaw Action Centre’s office is open for enquiries from 9.00am to 1.00pm (with an answerphone outside of these times). BAC is continuing to provide:

  • community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
  • housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
  • a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
  • the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
  • Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
  • home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service).
  • minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, they are looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

For further details on any of the above please contact BAC on 01777 709650 or by e-mail (enquiries@actioncentre.org.uk) Further information can be found on the website: www.bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk.

PLATINUM JUBILEE EVENTS (pic)

West Stockwith’s senior citizens were treated to an afternoon tea and entertainment depicting each decade of the Queen’s reign as part of the celebrations for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. This was followed by a family fun afternoon on the Malt Kiln. There were traditional games, a fancy-dress competition, stalls, music, tombola and raffle, and refreshments.

In addition to the two Platinum Jubilee events, West Stockwith Parish Council held a Best-dressed House competition. The winner was a house on Main Street (pictured).
