HEARTFELT THANKS FOR RESTORING GRAVE (+ pic)

The distant relatives of Kitty and Nan Jollands, buried in Misterton Cemetery, were so moved by the efforts of Misterton schoolgirl, Isabelle McCorkell, to renovate their grave that they sent her a treasured copy of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist inscribed by Nan herself. Isabelle is pictured with the book.

Over the years, with no close relatives, the women’s grave had fallen into disrepair. Thanks to a grant from District Cllr Hazel Brand to have the headstone re-erected, a donation of weed-proof membrane and gravel from ProTurf on North Carr Road, and Isabelle’s efforts, the grave has been restored to its former condition. Isabelle undertook the project as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Kitty Jollands died at the age of 21 and is buried in along with her sister and their parents. Misterton War Memorial is one of the few in the country to list a woman’s name: that of Nurse K Jollands.

NEW PCSO

With the retirement of PCSO Dave Airey at the end of April, a new PCSO has been appointed: John Dale. John can be contact by e-mail (John.Dale@notts.police.uk) or by phone (07971 784 181). Please note, however, that his number should not be used for reporting incidents - continue to use 999 if the incident is taking place, or 101 if is not an emergency or has already happened or there is information to pass on to Notts Police.

l Insp Hayley Crawford, newly-appointed neighbourhood policing inspector for the Bassetlaw area, writes a monthly blog, which can be found on the Notts Police website (www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/neighbourhood/bassetlaw-rural). “Rural crime is of great importance to me and our community,” she writes. In May, she met with inspectors from across the county border to discuss working together on tackling cross-border crime. The result of this was a Cross Border Rural Crime Operation with South Yorkshire and Derbyshire Police. The team included off-road bikes, dogs, and the Tactical Support Group. The results included stopping a van from South Yorkshire that had an angle grinder, often used for catalytic converter thefts, and 100 skeleton keys. Police also caught four people who attempted to steal a motorbike and were found in possession of two knives.
