TAKE CARE AROUND OPEN WATERWAYS

Following the tragic death of a 16-year-old boy in the Aire & Calder Navigation Canal earlier this month (12 July), Notts Fire & Rescue Service and Notts Police again issue an urgent safety warning: cooling off by jumping into cold water isn't cool! What might look tranquil and peaceful can be hiding dangers like strong currents, a cold temperature, and items below the surface.

That's why the professionals say: only enter the water in areas staffed by lifeguards, whether this is your local swimming pool or the beach. As well as currents, plants, reeds, and rocks can also be present below the surface of the water. Though they might sound harmless, rocks can be sharp, and reeds can get caught around limbs. Never judge water by its surface appearance.

Even on the hottest of days, water can still be extremely cold. Immediately after jumping into the water, body movements are likely to be impaired due to the cold and gasping due to the shock of the cold temperature. In addition, the water in our canal and river may be infected by rats' pee, which can cause Weil's Disease. So play safe and go to a swimming pool or the beach!

NEW ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGNS

Bassetlaw District Council is challenging drivers and passengers, who throw litter from their cars, to stop treating our roads as one giant littler bin with a hard-hitting message of ‘Don’t be a Tosser’.

The bold campaign, which has been used successfully by other local authorities across the country, aims to educate people who carelessly ‘toss’ litter from their cars of the impact their actions have on the environment, and that they could be fined up to £100. The hard-hitting and highly-visible images can be seen on the side of the Council’s refuse vehicles as they carry out their rounds throughout the District.

l Alongside this, the Council has also signed up to LitterLotto. This gives users the chance to win hundreds of prizes every month, simply by binning litter. All litter counts from a cigarette butt to a takeaway meal box. How does it work? Go to LitterLotto and download the app from either the App Store or Google Play. Once downloaded, the subscriber takes a picture with the app as they bin their litter. Every time a picture is sent to the app, it counts as another entry into the LitterLotto. Residents are asked to invite friends and family to join and earn bonus entries into the jackpot draw.

l You can report fly-tipping on the Bassetlaw District Council website (www.bassetlaw.gov.uk). For those without internet access, The Misterton Centre can do it for you (ring 890646) - or special 'report it' pads are available.

SIGN UP FOR NOTTS ALERT!

Following a spate of burglaries in and around West Stockwith, residents can sign up for Nottinghamshire Alert and get regular updates about issues in the area in a timely way. Notts Police, local authorities, Neighbourhood Watch, Trading Standards, and other public organisations use Notts Alert to keep people informed. When you sign up, you can choose which organisations can contact you, what information you'd like to receive, and whether you'd like to receive messages by e-mail, text message, or voice message. Go to www.nottinghamshirealert.co.uk

DOOR-TO-DOOR SELLERS

Notts Police is aware of men going door-to-door selling goods in the villages. From previous incidents, the males appear to be licensed but officers are trying to locate them to make sure.

Door-to-door sales staff must give their business name, contact details, and address – and an address for customer complaints. And Trading Standards gives advice on doorstep callers: never to buy goods or services from them; don’t answer the door if you are not expecting a caller. Check the identity of the caller but do not let the caller into your house until you have verified their ID. Remember that the number they give you may not be genuine but check their identity by ringing their employer using the phone number listed in the phone book or look for the number on a bill. If you have any concerns or suspicions then ask the caller to leave, close, and lock the door. If the caller will not leave and tries to gain entry, call the Police on 999.

The District Council publishes a list of permitted street collections and door-to-door sellers: www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/legal-and-licensing/street-collections/
