TAKE CARE SWIMMING – AND CLEAR UP AFTERWARDS! (+ pic)
Warnings have been issued about the danger of swimming in the River Idle and Chesterfield Canal. Four deaths have now been recorded across the country – all boys and men – after swimming in cold water on a hot day. Immediately after jumping into the water, body movements are likely to be impaired due to the cold and gasping due to the shock of the cold temperature. In addition, the water in our canal and river may be infected by rats' pee, which can cause Weil's Disease.
Residents are also browned off at the litter left by youngsters at local beauty spots along the River Idle (pictured). This has been reported to Bassetlaw District Council’s litter enforcement agency, which will issue Fixed Penalty Notices of £100 to people for littering (and dog fouling) offences. Surely parents must know that their children are putting their lives in danger and spoiling the countryside that others’ wish to enjoy?
NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN THE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE
The Summer Reading Challenge 2022 features the Gadgeteers – six fictional young innovators who, using creative thinking and teamwork, plan a party for their own’s summer fair celebration. Children taking part in the Reading Challenge will help the Gadgeteers come up with ingenious inventions to make the summer party the best ever. Misterton Library is again taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge, which is aimed at children aged 4 to 11 years. Though it started on
Saturday 9 July, there’s still time to read six books (or more) before the Challenge ends on Saturday 4 September.
Misterton Library has stickers and other rewards for every book read. Children who complete the challenge receive a medal and a certificate. Those taking part online earn digital badges and other online rewards with a certificate to download at the end of the challenge. Come along to Misterton Library or register online (summerreadingchallenge.org.uk)! Library volunteers look forward to seeing to you: the Library is now open on the 2nd and 4th Saturday mornings from 9.30am – 12 noon.

VILLAGE RESIDENT’S CHARITY PROVIDES SECURITY BLANKETS (+ pic)
West Stockwith resident, Helen Nixon, is the local co-ordinator of Project Linus UK, a volunteer organisation that aims to provide security and comfort to sick and traumatised babies, children, and teenagers by giving them new home-made patchwork quilts and knitted blankets (pictured).
Project Linus was named after the security blanket toting character from the Peanuts comic strip. The late Charles Schultz, its creator, was pleased to have Linus inspire blanket makers to help sick and traumatised children. You can help by making a quilt or knitted blanket and donating it to Project Linus UK. Or donate materials, such as cotton fabric, man-made yarns, office supplies, or postage stamps, which will help to keep the project run smoothly. Project Linus UK is 100% volunteer based and non-profit making so it relies on donations. For more information, contact the area co-ordinator, Helen Nixon (tel: 07785 378 371, e-mail: helenshouses@live.co.uk).
PARISH COUNCIL ADOPTS GREEN ACTION PLAN
West Stockwith Parish Council, which, jointly with Misterton Parish Council, runs a Green Group committed to combatting climate change, has adopted its first Green Action Plan. Drawn up by the Green Group, it outlines things that parish councils can do – and things that individuals and households can do – to tackle climate change. A guiding principle of the Green Group is what we, as individuals, can do: we can’t leave it to the international community. We can’t leave it to Government. We can’t leave it to county and district councils. Based on two reports by the Centre for Sustainable Energy (Carbon Footprint Report – Misterton and Carbon Footprint Report – West Stockwith), both villages lag behind the national average for per-household emissions in four areas:
- use of goods and services: this covers all household goods but not food, and services such as maintenance and repair of the home, vehicles and other equipment, banking and insurance, medical services, education costs, TV/internet/phone, and other fees and subscriptions
- travel: transport choices
- housing: use of energy in the home
- food and diet.
The Green Group will be looking behind these figures for the reasons and basing future actions on the findings. For the full report, go to the Parish Council’s website.
l The sell/swap event scheduled for Sunday 17 July was postponed due to the forecast heatwave that day. It will be re-scheduled for later in the year.
COUNTY COUNCIL TURNS DOWN VILLAGE WEIGHT LIMIT
The Parish Council has briefed County Cllr, Tracey Taylor, about the damage caused by large lorries passing through the village, on roads not constructed to cope with the size and weight of 21st-century vehicles. The County Council carried out a survey – but residents report that this was done on a Saturday, so the numbers did not reflect weekday usage. Now the Parish Council has asked that another survey be done to give more accurate figures.
