YOUNG PEOPLE TIDY UP THE VILLAGE (+ pic)

Young people from Misterton Youth Club spent a day (Tuesday 9 August) tidying up the village. They weeded around the Parish Church and removed ivy from gravestones, then they headed to the Chesterfield Canal (pictured) where they cleared away dead undergrowth and weeds. Many thanks to all the youngsters for taking pride in their village.

VILLAGE OPEN FOR RIDE & STRIDE AND WALKING EVENTS (+ pic)

On Saturday 10 September, Misterton will be the focus of a number of activities that highlight what the village has to offer:

  • the Parish Church and Methodist Church are both open for the annual Ride & Stride event when walkers, cyclists, users of motorised scooters, those with prams, or even horseback riders are encouraged to go around the six churches in the north-east of the county. Each will lay on special attractions for the day, which runs between 10.00am and 6.00pm. For details of Ride & Stride, go to nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk. Sponsorship forms and other information can be picked up from the Parish Church, open on Wednesdays and Sundays, 10.00am to 4.00pm
  • the Chesterfield Canal’s Walking Festival opens with a walk from Wharf Bridge to the Parish Church, taking in the historical features on the way. The walk is led by Misterton’s own historian, David Seymour, and begins at 10.00am. Numbers are limited so, to book, go to www.chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk or ring 01246 477 569
  • a free talk on stained glass in the Parish Church at 12.30pm. Among other historic windows, the Parish Church features a window by John Piper and his glassmaker, Patrick Reyntiens (pictured). They were responsible for the huge Baptistery window in Coventry Cathedral

Misterton is also the starting point of a walk organised by U3A on Saturday 17 September, leaving Misterton’s Red Hart pub at 10.30am. To book, use the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s details (above).

WEST STOCKWITH NEWS

Thursday 4 August 2022

Contact: 01427 891376

COUNCIL BRIEFED ON COMMUNITY AND SAFETY MEASURES

Every year, members of West Stockwith Parish Council and residents take part in a village litter-pick. At its last meeting before the summer recess, members were briefed on a new anti-litter drive by Bassetlaw District Council. The Council is challenging drivers and passengers, who throw litter from their cars, to stop treating our roads as one giant litter bin with a hard-hitting message of ‘Don’t be a Tosser’. The bold campaign, which has been used successfully by other local authorities, aims to educate people who carelessly ‘toss’ litter from their cars of the impact their actions have on the environment, and that they could be fined up to £100. The hard-hitting message can be seen on the side of the Council’s refuse vehicles as they carry out their rounds throughout the district.

Members were also updated on the new CCTV refuge point in Market Square in Retford (next to Santander Bank). It has been set up so that members of the public, especially women and girls, can instantly alert the District Council’s CCTV Control Room when they feel threatened or at risk. Calls can then be relayed to the Police. Upon activation, operators are able to assess the risk via a camera to secure evidence, determine what help is needed, dispatch the appropriate police response, and provide reassurance to the caller via two-way audio.

PARISH CHURCH IS FOCUS FOR RIDE & STRIDE AND WALKING EVENTS

Wet Stockwith’s Parish Church is the focus of a number of activities that highlight what the village has to offer on Saturday 10 September:

  • the Parish Church is open for the annual Ride & Stride event when walkers, cyclists, users of motorised scooters, those with prams, or even horseback riders are encouraged to go around the six churches in the north-east of the county. The Church will put on a display of historic photos between 10.00am and 4.00pm. For details of Ride & Stride, go to nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk
  • the Chesterfield Canal’s Walking Festival opens with a walk from the Parish Church to Misterton, Gringley, and Clayworth. The Historic Churches Walk is led by Notts Area Ramblers and begins at 10.15am. Numbers are limited so, to book, go to www.chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk or ring 01246 477 569.

West Stockwith also features in a walk organised by U3A on Saturday 17 September, leaving Misterton’s Red Hart pub at 10.30am.
