PARISH CHURCH NEEDS NEW ORGANIST (+ pic)

Misterton Parish Church is looking for a new organist when Fiona Law leaves at the end of August for a new job in Sheffield. Fiona (pictured at the Misterton organ) has been organist since 2006 and, as a Royal College graduate, has brought a new standard of professionalism to the role. So the Church Council is looking for a suitably qualified or experienced church organist to take over from September. At present, services are once a month (on the 4th Sunday). For further information, call 891376.

The Parish Church’s unique 1875 pipe organ was a gift from the Misses and Mr G Wells; it is over a century old and is regularly maintained. It has been played at weddings, funerals, and services for nearly 150 years and is almost entirely in its original condition. The organ was built by Brindley & Foster in Sheffield. The business was set up by Charles Brindley in 1854, joined by Albert Healey Foster in 1871. They began to manufacture complex organs, concentrating on the production of orchestral effects. The business is now one of the oldest organ-building companies in the world. There are over 2500 Willis organs in use from Norway to Nigeria to New Zealand. It is believed that Misterton’s organ was modernised with an electric motor in the 1960s. But the original hand pump remains in place.

PARISH COUNCIL’S SUMMER NEWSLETTER

The summer edition of Misterton Parish Council’s newsletter has been delivered – if you’ve mislaid a copy, there are spares at The Misterton Centre. The key items in this issue are:

  • installation of barriers on the A161
  • ‘save the date’ for the Christmas lights switch-on
  • joint parish councils’ green action plan
  • plea to young people to take their litter home with them
  • passing horses – a road safety campaign
  • review of the Platinum Jubilee events.

DAY OF EVENTS IN MISTERTON

Saturday 10 September will see Misterton as the focus of a number of activities that highlight what the village has to offer:

  • the Parish Church and Methodist Church are both open for the annual Ride & Stride event when walkers, cyclists, users of motorised scooters, those with prams, or even horseback riders are encouraged to go around the six churches in the north-east of the county. Each will lay on special attractions for the day, which runs between 10.00am and 6.00pm. For details of Ride & Stride, go to nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk. Sponsorship forms and other information can be picked up from the Parish Church, open on Wednesdays and Sundays, 10.00am to 4.00pm
  • the Chesterfield Canal’s Walking Festival opens with a walk from Wharf Bridge to the Parish Church, taking in the historical features on the way. The walk is led by Misterton’s own historian, David Seymour, and begins at 10.00am. Numbers are limited so, to book, go to www.chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk or ring 01246 477 569
  • a free talk on stained glass in the Parish Church at 12.30pm. Among other historic windows, the Parish Church features a window by John Piper and his glassmaker, Patrick Reyntiens. They were responsible for the huge Baptistery window in Coventry Cathedral

Misterton is also the starting point of a walk organised by U3A on Saturday 17 September, leaving Misterton’s Red Hart pub at 10.30am. To book, use the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s details (above).

MISTERTON’S 100 CLUB – TIME TO SIGN UP

Misterton’s 100 Club – a local lottery – runs from August to July so now is the time to sign up for the coming year. There are three prizes each month: £25, £15, and £10 – and participants are limited to 100. Run by the Parish Church, call Sue on 07984 478 371 to join. Each ‘lucky’ number is £1 a month and, subject to the lottery not exceeding 100 members, players can have as many numbers as they wish.

WEST STOCKWITH NEWS

GOT YOUR £150 ENERGY PAYMENT YET?

Any West Stockwith residents, who have not yet received their £150 Council Tax Rebate, are asked to submit their details to Bassetlaw District Council (BDC) in order to benefit from the Government’s energy payment to households in Council Tax Bands A to D.

Since May, more than £6m has already reached 86% of Bassetlaw residents, a total of 40,273 payments made by BDC. The majority of residents who pay their Council Tax by direct debit received payment in the first two months of the scheme. In July, the Council then wrote to more than 12,000 eligible residents, who do not pay their Council Tax by Direct Debit, asking them to provide their details in order to receive their payment.

More than two thirds of people have now responded to this letter. However, the Council is keen to hear from residents who have not responded or provided their details to date. Anyone without access to the internet can contact BDC’s Council Tax Team by phone to provide all the information needed to process the payment. Ring 02909 533 533.

When the majority of payments to all households in Bands A to D, BDC will begin to process payments under the Discretionary Scheme, which will run until 30 November. This covers households in Bands E to H, who are part of the Council Tax Reduction Scheme and meet all of the relevant criteria.
