PARISH CHURCH NOW OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK

Misterton Parish Church is now open for open to visitors every day from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Visitors may use the quietness of the Church to reflect on recent historical events; votive candles are available – they are often lit as a focus for prayer. There is a box at the rear of the Church for donations to Bassetlaw Food Bank, and the free paperback book exchange is back.

Once again, the Parish Church is supporting Operation Christmas Child. The charity invites gifts for children (and families) in a shoebox, covered with Christmas wrapping paper and filled with suitable toys, toiletries, etc. The shoeboxes will be distributed to the poorest people in Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Romania. Bring the box to the Parish Church (with £5 donation to cover transport) by 20 October and leave it at the back of the Church. From Misterton, the boxes will be taken to a regional collection point for onwards distribution in November.

TICKETS GOING FAST FOR AUTUMN CONCERT

Advance bookings for a big band concert in Misterton Parish Church are selling fast. All pre-paid ticketholders will have allocated seats at the front of the Church, but tickets will also be on sale at the door. Tickets are £7.50 (£3 for under-16s) and include a cream tea. Ring 891376 to book.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR DofE CANDIDATES

Organisations in Misterton can offer volunteer opportunities for young people wishing to embark on Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) awards. The Parish Council and Parish Church can offer short projects to fit with the awards timescales – projects that help to improve and enhance the community. To find out more, call 891376.

BIG MARKET DAY OFFERS CUSTOMERS BARGAINS

Retford is hosting another Big Market Day on Saturday 15 October in the Market Square and Buttermarket from 8.30am – 2.00pm. There are farmers’ and craft markets as well as the traditional market – all offering value-for-money goods and provisions as well as stallholders that are knowledgeable about their products.

There’s plenty for children, too, between 10.00am and 2.00pm. Attractions include Guiding Sparks Circus and Professor Paul Temple’s Punch & Judy Show.

DANGER OF TICKS IN LONG GRASS (+ pic)

A resident, who has been bitten by a tick and suffered years of ill-health, has asked that attention is drawn to the presence of ticks in all long grass. Ticks (one is pictured

but they come in different colours) latch onto the skin and feed on your blood. 60% of ticks are infected with Lyme’s Disease, and, as ticks live for 20 to 30 years, this problem is only going to get worse!

When walking through fields, or along the canal bank, it is important to protect yourself by tucking your jeans/trousers into your socks to stop the ticks crawling up inside your leg, If wearing shorts, use a tick repellent spray from all good outdoor camping and walking shops to spray on your legs/clothes. This gives good all-day protection. If you are bitten and the tick wasn't infected, then you shouldn't have more than a pin-prick mark on your skin. But if the tick carries Lyme's Disease then a large bullseye ring will appear. If you find this on your body, seek medical attention immediately, as it is important that you receive antibiotics within the first few weeks of being bitten.

Ticks also bite animals so check your dog's hair after walking through long grass!
