COUNCIL APPROVES FIRST NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN DEVELOPMENT
At its meeting last month (Tuesday 27 September), members of Misterton Parish Council supported the planning application for 48 dwellings on land north of Fox Covert Lane. This site was included in the Neighbourhood Plan after the landowner put it forward for housing and it met all the necessary criteria. The Neighbourhood Plan was ‘made’ after a majority (over 91%) of those voting in a referendum in 2019 supported Bassetlaw District Council using the Neighbourhood Plan to help it decide planning applications.
The Neighbourhood Plan, which spans 2018 to 2035, lists five sites for housing. Since publication, due to developments in neighbourhood planning, changes in legislation and guidance, and learning from other villages that completed their plans after Misterton, the Neighbourhood Plan is undergoing its first review. Consultation on the revised document is expected in November.
SCHOOL’S HARVEST FESTIVAL
This year, Misterton School is having its Harvest Festival at Misterton Methodist Church on Wednesday 12 October at 2.00pm. The School is asking for non-perishable food donations to be brought to school from Monday 10 to Wednesday 12 October. Donations will go to Bassetlaw Food Bank.
l Misterton Parish Church’s Harvest Festival is on Sunday 23 October at 11.00am. It is also when the Parish Church will celebrate its Patronal Festival – its birthday. Birthday cake will be served after the service. All are welcome and harvest gifts will again go to Bassetlaw Food Bank.
PROJECT TO CREATE HEDGEHOG HIGHWAYS
Misterton Parish Council is to buy a number of ‘hedgehog highway’ surrounds – a means of creating a permanent gap in hedges and fences so that hedgehogs can have free run to find food. Once delivered, the hedgehog highways will be available for residents to buy. Hedgehog numbers are declining: they are one of just three animals in the UK that hibernate. And they are an indicator species, acting as a barometer for the health of the local environment. When hedgehogs are thriving, other creatures are, too. But hedgehogs are in decline, an indicator of generally poor environmental health, which will eventually impact other species.

CHURCH TO CELEBRATE 300TH ANNIVERSARY (+ pic)
This year sees the Parish Church’s 300th anniversary – and plans are in place for the tercentenary celebrations in December. In 1714, William Huntington, a ship carpenter, bequeathed £740 for the erection of a chapel and 10 almshouses in his shipyard. The Church was built by the executors of his estate costing less than £300, and a main feature inside the Church is a life-size marble monument of William Huntington (pictured). From 1722, when building was completed, until 1896, the minister was appointed as chaplain by the trustees of Huntington’s Charity. The Church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and was consecrated on 30 September 1732 by the Archbishop of York.
If anyone has any historic photographs or documents they could loan for the 300th celebrations, please get in touch with Stephanie Baines, Churchwarden (tel: 07500 043 842).
l Sunday 30 October at 11.00am is when the Parish Church holds its Harvest Festival. Any gifts may be left in the Church or brought to the service on Sunday. All donations will go to Bassetlaw Food Bank.
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD (AND FAMILY)
Anyone wishing to support Operation Christmas Child will find a collection point in Misterton Parish Church. The charity invites gifts for children (and families) in the form of a shoebox, covered with Christmas wrapping paper and filled with suitable toys, toiletries, etc. The shoeboxes will be distributed to the poorest people in Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Romania.
There are leaflets about the appeal in Misterton Parish Church (open daily from 10.00am to 4.00pm). Donors are asked to include £5 to cover the cost of processing and transportation. All the details are in the literature or go to samaritans-purse.org.uk/occ. So just take a normal-sized shoebox, fill it with toys, personal care items, school supplies, and accessories such as socks, a wind-up torch, jewellery, and watches. Take the box to Misterton Parish Church (with donation) by 20 October and leave it at the back of the Church. From Misterton, the boxes will be transported to a regional collection point for onwards distribution in November.
ADVICE ON A TRUSTWORTHY TRADESPERSON
Notts County Council Trading Standards Service has received a report of a trader asking for more money and threatening a resident when they refused to pay. This trader was selected from an online forum that finds traders for requested jobs.
If you are finding a trader using online forums and lists, Trading Standards always suggest undertaking research to find out what checks are made before businesses are listed.
To ensure charges are a reasonable price for the work, it is advised that householders obtain at least three quotes from different businesses before agreeing to any works being done. This should provide the name and address of the trader, along with the work they will undertake.
Ask your friends and family for recommendations or get free ‘pre-shopping advice’ by contacting the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133. Alternatively, find approved traders on Buy with Confidence on https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk/
FAKE MESSAGES FROM THE 'ENERGY REGULATOR'
Action Fraud is warning the public about a sharp rise in reports relating to fake e-mails purporting to be from Ofgem, the independent energy regulator. The e-mails claim that the recipient is due a rebate payment as part of a Government scheme and provides links for the recipient to follow in order to apply for the rebate.
The links in the e-mails lead to malicious websites designed to steal personal and financial information.
Between Monday 22 August and Monday 5 September, a total of 1567 phishing e-mails related to this scam were reported via the Suspicious E-mail Reporting Service (SERS). All the e-mails display the e-mail subject header “Claim your bill rebate now”.
Scammers are using the Ofgem brand logo and colours to make the e-mails look as authentic as possible. However, the e-mails ask recipients to “apply for an energy bill rebate before September 2020”, which is what prompted many recipients to realise the e-mails weren’t genuine.
