FLOODING INFORMATION LEAFLET
Living in an area that can be prone to flooding, whether from river or surface water, means there’s a need to be prepared. Bassetlaw District Council (BDC) has produced a leaflet outlining eight ways to be prepared, what to do during and after a flood, and who does what during a flood. The leaflet is accompanied by a personal flood plan. Copies are available at The Misterton Centre or on the BDC website (www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/flooding/flooding-in-bassetlaw/).
l Heavy rain in November meant the sewage system could not cope and effluent arose in residents’ gardens. This is a long-standing problem that Severn Trent is well aware of. The advice from BDC is always to report such incidents, and send photos if possible. It is only by everyone reporting incidents that the problem rises up the authority’s ‘To do’ list.
KEEP WARM, KEEP WELL
There are three designated ‘warm spaces’ in Misterton, in addition to pubs and cafes. They are Misterton Library, Thursday’s weekly coffee morning at the Methodist Church, and the monthly coffee morning on the second Tuesday in the Church Room.
The Met Office and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued a warning that all regions of England would experience severe cold weather in early December. This warning is likely to be repeated over the winter. With low temperatures and overnight frosts, the UKHSA encourages people to stay warm and look out for those most at risk from the effects of cold weather. For people struggling to afford heating bills, gov.uk provides advice on national grants that are available to help keep you warm this winter. Advice includes:
- if people can’t heat all the rooms, just heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before going to sleep
- wear several layers of thinner clothing rather than one thicker layer
- have plenty of hot food and drinks.
BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE
Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:
- community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
- housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
- a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
- the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
- Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
- home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service).
- minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.
BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, they are looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.
For further details on any of the above please contact BAC on 01777 709650 or by e-mail (enquiries@actioncentre.org.uk) Further information can be found on the website: www.bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS NET FUNDS FOR PARISH CHURCH (+ pic)
Santa came early for those raising funds for St Mary’s Parish Church – a joint event with West Stockwith Parish Council raised £1000 for the roof appeal. On the Malt Kiln, the Christmas lights were switched on (pictured), Gainsborough’s Salvation Army Band played carols, and residents joined in as well as sampling the food and drink on offer.
The Parish Church has to raise £25,000 for full refurbishment of the roof. The beams used to build it were recycled from William Huntington’s shipyard in 1722, when the Church was built. These beams are now in urgent need of repair, and a professional report from 2021 lists a range of necessary repairs to the roof space as well. All funds for the upkeep, repairs, and running costs of the Parish Church have to be raised by residents. Just to keep the Church watertight, insured, and heated costs £4000 a year. Despite local attempts to raise the money needed for the roof repairs through various events, the Church Council is still £13,000 short. So the Christmas ‘present’ was a welcome addition to the continued fundraising.
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO USE UP OLD STAMPS
The deadline by which to use up or swap old stamps has been extended from 31 January to 31 July 2023 - giving letter writers more time to sort out stamps. From that date, Royal Mail will only accept new barcoded stamps. So use up any ‘old’ stamps by 31 July—or swap them for new ones. But this can’t be done at Misterton Post Office, only by post by sending them to Freepost SWAP OUT along with personal details and the number of stamps sent to be exchanged. The new, barcoded stamps are now on sale at Post Offices.
