LIGHTS SWITCH-ON LAUNCHES CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS (+ pic)
The Parish Council held a competition to find a child to switch on the Christmas lights – and Harry Egan was the lucky winner. He is pictured doing the honours on Church Meadow earlier this month. Children had formed a lantern parade from the old school to Church Meadow and hundreds attended the annual switch-on event. Community group, Misterton Sparkles, had raised funds for decorative lights on lampposts and the Parish Council had bought new trees for Windmill Garden and the churchyard to add to lighting-up for Christmas.
Cerys Bishop and friends won the Parish Council’s Christmas tree competition. Highly commended were the trees from Misterton School and from Maria Cockerham, whose dog-themed decorations tied in with her dog grooming business.
On Church Meadow, Gainsborough’s Salvation Army band played Christmas carols while residents browsed the many stalls. The Parish Council raised over £350, which will be divided between the First Responders and the Parish Church.
l Still in Church is the Memory Tree - tie a gift-tag to the tree, with the name of, or a message to, someone you have loved and lost. All names will be blessed at the service in Misterton Parish Church on Christmas Day.
SCHOOL CHRISTINGLE FILLS PARISH CHURCH (+ pic)
Pupils of Misterton Primary School filled the village’s Parish Church for the annual Christingle (pictured). The service was taken by Rev Becky Hancock, who reminded children, and the many parents and carers attending, that the light of Christ can dispel darkness in all its forms. Christingle is sponsored by the Children’s Society, which provides specialist support that empowers young people to make positive changes in their lives.
SENIOR CITIZENS’ LUNCH & ENTERTAINMENT
Back in person after lockdown, the annual lunch and entertainment for Misterton’s senior citizens is on Saturday 14 January in the Methodist Hall. Doors open at 1.00pm. Invitations have gone out – but, if you haven’t had one, are new to the village, or newly-reached retirement age. and would like an invitation, call 891629.
STABLES HAS FUNDING FOR NEW PROJECT
Grove House Stables’ community interest company (CIC), I-Pegasus, has been awarded funding for a project to help a group of children, aged eight and over, from low socio-economic backgrounds or who may benefit from social, emotional, and mental health support. The six-week programme aims to build participants’ confidence, communication skills, and resilience while enjoying their time with horses in the countryside environment.
The first six-week course begins on Tuesday 3 January 2023. Places are limited. For more information, please contact Andrew Stennett, Grove House Stables Equestrian Centre, Grovewood Road, Misterton DN10 4EF (tel: 890802 or e-mail admin@i-pegasus.org.uk).
NEW DATE FOR CAROL SERVICE, SOUTHMOOR LODGE
December’s Carol Service at Southmoor Lodge was postponed due to an outbreak of flu. The Carol Service has been rescheduled to Wednesday 11 January. This is still within the church’s season of Christmas - so it will be held then, providing infection rates are under control.

FLOODING INFORMATION LEAFLET
Living in an area that can be prone to flooding, whether from river or surface water, means there’s a need to be prepared. Bassetlaw District Council (BDC) has produced a leaflet outlining eight ways to be prepared, what to do during and after a flood, and who does what during a flood. The leaflet is accompanied by a personal flood plan. Copies are available at The Misterton Centre or on the BDC website (www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/flooding/flooding-in-bassetlaw/).
l Heavy rain in November meant the sewage system could not cope and effluent arose in residents’ gardens. This is a long-standing problem that Severn Trent is well aware of. The advice from BDC is always to report such incidents, and send photos if possible. It is only by everyone reporting incidents that the problem rises up the authority’s ‘To do’ list.
