MISTERTON PIANIST TO FEATURE ON THE SMALL SCREEN
Misterton pianist, Gabrielle Overton, has been selected to take part in the Channel 4 series, The Piano. The ‘reality show’ will showcase the talents of unsuspecting pianists at railway stations around the UK. Gabrielle was spotted at Leeds railway station, where there is a public piano, by host of the show, Claudia Winkleman, and Lang Lang, the Chinese pianist, who has been playing with leading orchestras since the 1990s. The Piano begins on Wednesday 15 February; Gabrielle is due to appear in the second episode.
QUIZ NIGHT RAISES FUNDS FOR BOWLS CLUB
A quiz night at the Haxey Gate Inn raised £185 for Misterton Bowls Club. Fund-raising is needed to keep the Club going and maintain the green in good condition. So fund-raising continues with a family bingo night on Friday 17 February at 6.30pm in the Methodist Hall, Misterton.
LENT BEGINS WITH TRADITIONAL SERVICE
The 40-day period of Lent begins on Wednesday 22 February, known as Ash Wednesday, and ends on Saturday 8 April. The word Lent is a shortened form of the Old English word lencten, meaning spring season. It follows Shrove Tuesday or ‘pancake day’ when ancient customs dictated using up rich, perishable food before fasting during Lent. So it is not only a religious observance commemorating the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, it is also a time when many mirror that fasting and ‘give up’ something for Lent - meat, wine, chocolate - partly after the excesses of Christmas and New Year. This year, the beginning of Lent is marked with a special service at Clayworth Parish Church at 7.00pm when the priest will make (those that are happy with the custom) the sign of the cross with ash from burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations.

CHURCH’S ROOF REPAIRS TAKE OFF!
Work begins on repairs to West Stockwith Parish Church’s roof this month (Monday 20 February) and will last for around a month. It is hoped to raise a little more money to redecorate the Church’s interior at the same time. Having raised most of the £25,000 for full refurbishment of the roof, the Church Council is hopeful that applications for outstanding grants will be successful and plastering and re-painting will complete work to the Georgian building. The Church will be closed during the week while the contractors are at work but may be open at weekends – check with the churchwarden before visiting (07500 043 842). The Church will be open for a concert on Wednesday 8 March.
The beams used to build the Church roof were recycled from William Huntington’s shipyard in 1722, when the Church was built. These beams are now in urgent need of repair, and a professional report from 2021 lists a range of other necessary repairs to the roof space as well. All funds for the upkeep, repairs, and running costs of the Parish Church have to be raised by residents. Just to keep the Church watertight, insured, and heated costs £4000 a year.
CHURCH CONCERT SERIES BEGINS IN MARCH (pic)
Opening a programme of concerts in West Stockwith Parish Church is narrator Susan Hollingworth, accompanied by Andrea Jefferies and Caroline Clemmow, pianist. A renowned storyteller, who was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to music and the community in Scunthorpe, Susan (pictured) will perform Paddington’s first concert, Albert and the Lion, and items from Façade. The performance is on Wednesday 8 March at 7.30pm in the Parish Church. A suggested donation is £6, which includes a drink. Tickets are available by calling 07500 043 842 or at the door. l Th next date in the concert series is Sunday 9 July with a performance by the Lydian Singers.
