FIRE STATION NOW RECRUITING

Misterton Fire Station is now recruiting On Call firefighters for training courses in August and September this year. There are vacancies for up to six more personnel to help the Fire Station maintain a 24/7 emergency response.

Notts Fire & Rescue Services can offer the opportunity to learn new skills, improve and maintain personal fitness, train to be part of a crew and respond to all manner of incidents on the fire appliance, and the chance to challenge yourself. Enhanced first aid training enables recruits to respond to medical emergencies within the local communities (Misterton is one of only two stations in the county that operates a medical responder vehicle) - and you'll even be paid to do it all! MISTERTON BOWLS CLUB GEARS UP FOR NEW SEASON

Misterton Bowls Club is getting ready for the new season with a pre-season meeting at the clubhouse on the Sports Field on Monday 20 March at 7.00pm when anyone interested in joining us will be warmly welcomed.

Then there’s an Open Day on Saturday 22 April at 2.00pm and all are welcome to come along and have a go. It’s a sport suitable for all ages – winner of the men’s singles World Indoor Bowls Championship in January was 31-year-old Jamie Walker while 27-year-old Katherine Rednall won the women’s singles title. At the other end of the age range, at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 the oldest competitor was a member of Scotland’s bowls team, George Miller, aged 75.

Misterton Bowls Club plays throughout the summer in friendly matches and in different leagues.

VOTING IN MAY’S ELECTIONS

There are elections for district and parish councillors in Bassetlaw in May. Anyone wishing to have a postal vote should apply now – an application form is on the Electoral Commission website or ring the Elections Unit at Bassetlaw District Council on 01909 533 533. Completed forms can be returned by post to the Elections Unit, Bassetlaw District Council, Queen's Buildings, Potter Street, Worksop S80 2AH or

scanned and e-mailed to elections@bassetlaw.gov.uk

From May 2023, electors who wish to vote in person - including those acting as a proxy on behalf of another individual - will be required to produce an accepted form of photographic ID to confirm their identity before they will be issued with a ballot paper at a polling station. The requirement for photographic ID at UK Parliamentary General Elections will only take effect for elections held after 5 October 2023.

Free Voter Authority Certificates (VAC) can be requested by anyone who cannot (or do not want to) apply online. Download the paper application form (www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/elections-in-bassetlaw/voter-identification/) or ring the number above. The deadline for applications for a VAC is 5.00pm, six working days ahead of a poll. For the Bassetlaw District Council and Parish Council Elections on 4 May, so the deadline for applications is 25 April.

CHARITY DAYS RAISE FUNDS FOR EATHQUAKE VICTIMS

Ellicar Gardens at Gringley on the Hill opens early for the Spring and Summer season to raise money for the British Red Cross’ Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal and a local hedgehog rescue centre. On Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 March, from 11.00am to 4.00pm, the 5-acre, naturalistic, and wildlife-friendly gardens will be open, serving artisan coffee home-baked cake. The garden features winter specials, fragrant winter flowering shrubs, and early spring bulbs. Relax beside the natural swimming pool and see the rare breed pets and Golden Guernsey goats.

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:

community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)
minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, they are looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

WORK BEGINS ON PARISH CHURCH ROOF (+ pic)

Work has started on repairing the roof of the village Church and will last for around a month. Pictured are the specialist conservation contractors, Robinsons from Salford, starting work. It is hoped to raise a little more money to redecorate the Church’s interior at the same time. Having raised most of the £25,000 for full refurbishment of the roof, the Church Council is hopeful that applications for outstanding grants will be successful and plastering and re-painting will complete work to the Georgian building. Although much of the work is in the roof space, the Church may be closed during the week while the contractors are at work but should be open at weekends – check with the churchwarden before visiting (07500 043 842). The Church will be open for a concert on Wednesday 8 March.

The beams used to build the Church roof were recycled from William Huntington’s shipyard in 1722, when the Church was built. These beams are now in urgent need of repair, and a professional report from 2021 lists a range of other necessary repairs to the roof space as well. All funds for the upkeep, repairs, and running costs of the Parish Church have to be raised by residents. Just to keep the Church watertight, insured, and heated costs £4000 a year.

CHURCH’S ANNUAL MEETING

West Stockwith Parish Church will hold its Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) on Tuesday 25 April at 6.30pm in the Church. Forms are now available in Church (on a table near the front of the Church) for nomination to the Electoral Roll, to elect Churchwardens, and to join the Parochial Church Council (PCC). If the Church is closed due to building works, the forms are on the Parish Resources website (www.parishresources.org.uk/pccs/apcms/) or ring the PCC Secretary, Hazel Brand, on (01427) 891376. Each of the forms gives details of qualifying criteria.

THINK ‘WIDEN’ TO PREVENT BURGLARY

Nearly two-thirds (65%) of us are worried about our home being broken into, according to Neighbourhood Watch. Yet there are simple, proven measures we can all take to halve our chances of being burgled. The measures spell the word ‘WIDEN’:

Interior lights on a timer
Doors double locked or deadlocked
Exterior lights on a sensor
(Neighbours) keep an eye out.
