MISTERTON'S HISTORIC JOLLAND MEMORIAL RESTORED (+ pic)
Misterton War Memorial is one of the few in the country to list a woman’s name: that of Nurse K Jollands. Kitty Jollands died at the age of 21 and is buried in Misterton Cemetery along with her sister, Agnes (Nan), and their parents. Over the years, with no close relatives, the memorial fell into disrepair.
Now thanks to a grant from District Cllr Hazel Brand to have the headstone re-erected, a donation of weed-proof membrane and gravel from ProTurf on North Carr Road, and the efforts of Misterton youngster Isabelle McCorkell, the grave has been restored to its former condition. Isabelle (pictured) weeded the grave ready for the membrane and gravel and cleaned the headstone as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Many thanks to Isabelle and all those who have helped to get this historic memorial back into a respectable condition as befits the memory of those buried there.
LAST CHANCE TO SEE LOCAL ARTISTS’ WORK
Amateur artists from Misterton and West Stockwith, who are members of Brushstrokes, are exhibiting their work in Bassetlaw Museum – but the exhibition ends on Saturday 2 April. Much of the work was completed during lockdown, but the group is now back meeting in person and also has a local exhibition on Saturday/Sunday 20/21 May.
BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: SERVICES OPEN
Bassetlaw Action Centre’s office is open for enquiries from 9.00am to 1.00pm (with an answerphone outside of these times). BAC is continuing to provide:
- community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
- Befriending and Housing Advice services, which are telephone-based
- the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) will be delivered through Zoom
- the Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support (but no group activities, unfortunately – they are temporarily suspended)
- Home Support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service).
BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people.
BAC’s priority is to stop the spread of the virus and to encourage people to stay at home, wherever possible. Staff encourage anyone needing any help or at risk of social isolation to contact them on 01777 709650 or by e-mail (enquiries@actioncentre.org.uk) as they are working with a range of key partners to provide help and support where needed.
