PARISH COUNCIL ELECTS NEW CHAIR
In the first meeting after parish elections, members of Misterton Parish Council elected Peter Marsden as Chair and Alex Bland as Vice-chair. Peter had previously been Chair of the Parish Council for a number of years; he was succeeded by Tony Wing, who has resigned from the Council due to the pressure of work.
Members were joined by two youth councillors: Harry Jackson and Suriya Kaur. This is a new initiative by the Parish Council to hear the voice of young people at its meetings. Harry and Suriya had stood for election by their peers and were duly selected. Although they do not have a vote in Council meetings, their views on a range of subjects relating to the village will be important.
LIBRARY HOLDS FAMILY FUN DAY
Misterton Library is holding a free family fun activity session on Thursday 1 June
from 2.30-4.30pm. There will be pot decorating, seed sowing, and making cress heads and miniature gardens. Grown-ups can enjoy a cuppa and a chat. And, of course, there are books galore to interest readers of all ages.
NEW BOTTLE BANKS IN MISTERTON
Additional bottle banks are being placed in the car park at the Haxey Gate Inn. This is in addition to bottle banks at the Red Hart, Misterton, at the Waterfront and car park opposite the White Hart in West Stockwith, and at the Fox & Hounds in Walkeringham.
INFORMATION SESSION ON AVOIDING FRAUD AND SCAMS
Staff of the Yorkshire Building Society in Gainsborough will be at a regular monthly Coffee Morning in Misterton to outline how to avoid being a victim of fraudsters. The Coffee Morning is on Tuesday 13 June in the Church Room, Misterton, from 10.30-11.30am. All are welcome – refreshments are £2 and there is an optional raffle. The group meets on the 2nd Tuesday every month.
BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE
Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:
- community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
- housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
- a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
- the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
- Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
- home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)
- minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.
BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, they are looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

PARISH COUNCIL GIVES RESIDENTS CORONATION MEMEMTO (+ pic)
West Stockwith Parish Council gave residents souvenirs of King Charles lll’s Coronation. Forty-four households that had requested them were given a Coronation Tea Caddy and Biscuits while 19 children received a boxed Coronation Medal. The gifts were presented at an afternoon tea during the afternoon of the Coronation. Pictured is the newly-elected District Councillor, Hazel Brand (third from left), with residents.
CHANGES TO COUNCIL LINE-UP
At the Annual General Meeting of West Stockwith Parish Council (Thursday 11 May), Cllr Sue Harford stood down as Chair of the Parish Council after five years at the helm. She was succeeded by her Deputy, Cllr Jonathan Downes. Two new parish councillors were elected: Helen Hartnell and Corinne Cooper. ….
INTERNATIONAL OPERA SINGER COMES TO WEST STOCKWITH
Kamilla Dunstan, an internationally-renowned mezzo soprano originally from Scrooby, will be in concert at St Mary’s Parish Church on Monday 26 June at 7.15pm. Tickets for the concert are £10 (at the door) and include cheese and wine.
Kamilla moved from Nottinghamshire to New Zealand then back to the UK to complete her studies. She made her Royal Opera House debut this April, singing the role of Ramise in Arminio (Handel). Kamilla will be supported by pupils of her Vivo Music Studio, a private studio in Scrooby set up in 2008. Students have been offered places and gone onto train at leading performing arts schools such as the Royal College of Music (London), Urdang (London), Performers College (Essex), Body Works (Cambridge), and LIPA (Liverpool). And students have also had major successes at National Competitions, such as David Clover Festival of Singing (Sheffield), Mrs Sunderland Festival (Huddersfield), Worksop Music & Drama Festival, and the Robin Hood Music & Drama Festival (Doncaster).
For the performance, Kamilla will be joined by some of her students ranging in all ages and abilities. The concert programme will consist of works by composers such as Mozart, Donizetti, Handel, Saint-Saens, and some Musical Theatre Classics.
Kamilla’s other recent roles include cover Komponist (Ariadne auf Naxos) for Opera North, and The Royal Ballet's new production of Like Water For Chocolate. Previous roles included Waltraute (The Valkyrie) for English National Opera, Second Lady (The Magic Flute) for Glyndebourne Tour, cover Eurydice The Woman (The Mask of Orpheus) for English National Opera; Flosshilde (Das Rheingold) for Birmingham Philharmonic; and Ariodante for The London Handel Festival. Kamilla was a Polonsky Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival & School, a Samling Artist, and a Wagner Stipendien (Bayreuth Festspiele).
