RESIDENTS TOLD HOW TO AVOID FRAUD & SCAMS

Stop. Challenge. Protect. These were the three watchwords to avoid being a victim of financial fraud or scams. Staff of Yorkshire Building Society's Gainsborough branch joined Misterton’s Tuesday Coffee Morning (2nd Tuesday of every month, Church Room, 10.30am) to outline some of the current hazards, how to avoid them, and what to do if affected.

Criminals are becoming more sophisticated: in 2021 (the latest year for which figures are available) over £1.3bn was taken fraudulently with £583m in scams alone. The most frequent frauds and scams are:

  • investment (conning people to move money into a so-called safe investment)
  • property (fake adverts/websites and pressured selling)
  • cryptocurrency (not covered by the Financial Conduct Authority's protection policy)
  • romance (establishing a 'relationship' then asking for money)
  • purchase (using cloned websites to look like a real company)
  • impersonation (eg pretending to be the Tax Office).

The Building Society staff gave some tips to prevent fraud/scams: pay with a credit card rather than a bank card; if there's a suspicious phone call, use a different phone to call your bank or the company to check it (fraudsters can stay on the line and pretend to be your bank); and report the incident to Action Fraud (0300 123 2040 Monday to Friday 8.00am - 8.00pm). If you’ve been tricked, contact your bank immediately.

CHILDREN’S SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

Misterton Library is again taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge, this year called Ready, Set, Read! It invites children, aged 4 to 11, to read six or more library books over the summer, between Saturday 8 July and Sunday 3 September. There are rewards for each book read, with a medal and certificate for every child who completes the Challenge. This year, children join the team (and their animal

mascots) as they weave their way through an obstacle course. There is more information in the Library – so sign up now!

VISIT LOCAL VILLAGE CHURCHES FOR CHARITY (+ pic)

Organiser of the annual Ride & Stride, Notts Historic Churches Trust, has supported the refurbishment of St Mary’s Church with the promise of a substantial grant. Now it’s time to raise funds for the Trust by taking part in this year’s Ride & Stride on Saturday 9 September. It’s a chance to cycle, walk, ride on horseback… use any means of transport to attract sponsors and to visit churches; the total money raised is split between the Notts Historic Churches Trust and the participating church you support. Visit as many as you can – set yourself a challenge. Can you visit all the churches in the Oswaldbeck Benefice: Beckingham, Clayworth, Gringley, Misterton, Walkeringham and West Stockwith (pictured)?

There are eight reasons to get involved:

  • saving beautiful buildings for the next generation
  • explore the fine heritage these special buildings have to offer…
  • … and you won’t have to travel far to see it
  • anyone can take part
  • get a physical and mental boost
  • come closer to nature, too
  • there’s a photography competition
  • and free refreshments!
