LIBRARY HOSTS SPECIAL EVENTS FOR CHILDREN’S SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

Misterton Library is holding special events over the summer to accompany this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, called Ready, Set, Read! It invites children, aged 4 to 11, to read six or more library books over the summer, between Saturday 8 July and Sunday 3 September. There are rewards for each book read, with a medal and certificate for every child who completes the Challenge.

The first event is on Wednesday 26 July, from 2.30 to 4.30pm, called Ready, Set, Games! There will be family games, books, and refreshments all reflecting the Reading Challenge theme. Further events are on Saturday 12 August from 10.00am to 12 noon, which will be a repeat of Ready, Set, Games! Then on Wednesday 23 August there’s a Teddy Bears picnic with games, refreshments, and choosing books and story time for teddies (or any favourite cuddly toy). The event is from 2.30 to 4.30pm.

At other times, the Library is open on Tuesday-Thursday afternoons from 2.00-5.00pm and on the 2nd and 4th Saturday morning, 9.30am – 12.30pm.

PARISH COUNCIL’S SPRING NEWSLETTER

Misterton Parish Council’s latest newsletter for residents has been delivered to all houses. With it is a special supplement on how to cut out food waste. In the UK, we throw away 6.6 million tonnes of food waste a year; almost 75% of it could have been eaten. According to a 2016 Government report, the cost of food waste to an average household is estimated to be £470 a year.

If you’ve mislaid your copy, there are spares at The Misterton Centre – just call in during opening hours. Or go to the Parish Council’s Facebook page.

SINGERS RAISE THE ROOF IN CHURCH CONCERT (+ pic)

Playing to a packed church, renowned opera singer Kamilla Dunstan from Scrooby, and local singers under her tutelage, entertained guests at West Stockwith Parish Church (Monday 26 June) to help raise funds for the building. Kamilla (right) is pictured with Stephanie Baines, Churchwarden, who leads the Church’s fund-raising appeal, which has recently seen completion of work to the roof. The concert raised approaching £1000.

Kamilla, a mezzo-soprano, has sung in a range of roles from Mozart to Engelbert Humperdinck and with companies such as the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne, and English National Opera. She runs Vivo Music Studio in Scrooby; from there, students have gone onto train at leading performing arts schools.

● The next event in the Parish Church is on Sunday 9 July when there is a concert by the Lydian Choir at 3.00pm. Tickets (£8) include cream tea. To book, call 07500 043 842. All proceeds to the Church maintenance fund
