CHARITY HAS FUNDS FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN NEED

The Goodwin Charity has funds available for elderly people (aged 60 or over), who are needy and live within the former Retford Rural District Area. This includes residents of Misterton and West Stockwith.

For financial assistance towards a specific need, such as disability aids, household goods/furniture, stair-lifts, bathroom aids, mobility aids, etc, contact the Administrator to the Managing Trustees (tel: 890780 or e-mail goodwincharity@outlook.com).

All applications are dealt with in the strictest confidence but applicants must wait for a decision of the Trustees before having work done or making a purchase as monies cannot be paid retrospectively. District Cllr Hazel Brand is a trustee and is happy to discuss possible applications.

PARISH COUNCIL CHANGES MEETING DATES

Members of Misterton Parish Council have voted to hold meetings every month instead of bi-monthly. There is no meeting during the August recess so the date of the next meeting is Tuesday 12 September at 7.30pm in the Granary Room at Grove House Farm.

RESIDENTS ASKED FOR INTEREST IN SPEEDWATCH

Residents, who are concerned about speeding through the village, are invited to contact Misterton Parish Council to see if there is sufficient interest in reviving a local SpeedWatch group. Notts Police is training a number of residents from other villages, including West Stockwith. Parish councils have to buy the speed gun and equipment – but this is only a good use of public funds if residents support the scheme. LIBRARY HOLDS FAMILY EVENTS TO SUPPORT READING CHALLENGE

Volunteers running Misterton Library are holding events this summer to support the Summer Reading Challenge, in which the Library is taking part. The first event is on Wednesday 26 July, 2.30-4.30pm, called ‘Ready, Set, Games! Further information is in the Library – it’s not too late to sign up! There are two special events in August:

on Saturday 12 August, there’s a repeat session of Ready, Set, Games! in the Library from 10.00am—12noon
then on Wednesday 23 August, it’s a Teddy Bears’ Picnic, from 2.30-4.30pm.

The Summer Reading Challenge, this year called Ready, Set, Read! invites children, aged 4 to 11, to read six or more library books over the summer, between Saturday 8 July and Sunday 3 September. There are rewards for each book read, with a medal and certificate for every child who completes the Challenge.

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:

community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)
minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

CHURCH’S SUMMER CONCERT SEASON CONTINUES (+ pix)

The Lydian Choir entertained the audience in the Parish Church (Sunday 9 July) with a selection of songs from the 16^th century to more contemporary composers. The afternoon’s entertainment included cream teas, served in the delightful surroundings of the Church’s garden.

The Lydian Choir is a group of dedicated and experienced musicians, which performs concerts in Scunthorpe and the surrounding area under the musical direction of Susan Hollingworth. In recent years, the choir has forged international links, with three singing tours to the French Alps as well as a trip to Southern Spain. The choir totals about 40 singers and has been conducted by Susan Hollingworth for over 10 years. The choir mostly sang unaccompanied with two solo performances by members of the Choir.

HELP WITH HOME IMPROVEMENTS TO LOWER ENERGY BILLS

Bassetlaw District Council is helping residents to lower their energy bills and improve the efficiency of their homes. The Home Energy Improvement scheme has so far helped 60 properties in Bassetlaw receive free energy efficient works.

West Stockwith residents may be eligible for grants if they meet the following criteria:

live in a property with no gas supply and an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G, and earn a combined household income of less than £31,000 per annum
live in a property with a gas supply and an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G, and earn a combined household income of less than £30,000 per annum.

Bassetlaw District Council is working with Nottingham Energy Partnership (NEP) to administer the scheme. For more information or to apply, contact Nottingham Energy Partnership on 0115 985 9057. So far, the scheme has included the installation of external wall insulation on 22 homes, loft insulation in 45 properties, and Solar PV to 18 properties across Bassetlaw. The scheme also offers air source heat pumps, double-glazed windows, and cavity wall insulation to eligible properties.
