Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, is offering groups, organisations, and charities the chance to apply for grants of between £500 and £5000, as well as smaller grants of between £500 and £1000.

Applications are welcome from both constituted and non-constituted organisations and the grant could help to create and deliver new projects such as hosting music, dance and drama workshops, create artworks, sculptures, murals in the community, or even help to host a mini-festival.

The funding is part of a package of measures that will be delivered over the next two years, thanks to Bassetlaw District Council securing more than £3.3m of the Government’s UKSPF monies. This will help to fund projects and initiatives that build pride in place and increase life chances across three key areas - Community and Place, Local Businesses and People and Skills. The application period for this funding will end on Monday 7 August at 12noon. To learn more about who can apply for each grant and how to bid for funding, visit www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/ukspf

CHARITY HAS FUNDS FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN NEED

The Goodwin Charity has funds available for elderly people (aged 60 or over), who are needy and live within the former Retford Rural District Area. This includes residents of Misterton and West Stockwith.

For financial assistance towards a specific need, such as disability aids, household goods/furniture, stair-lifts, bathroom aids, mobility aids, etc, contact the Administrator to the Managing Trustees (tel: 890780 or e-mail goodwincharity@outlook.com).

All applications are dealt with in the strictest confidence but applicants must wait for a decision of the Trustees before having work done or making a purchase as monies cannot be paid retrospectively. District Cllr Hazel Brand is a trustee and is happy to discuss possible applications.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2023

It may be four months away but not too soon to plan to enter the Christmas Tree Festival, part of the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights on Friday 1 December. The display of Christmas trees will be in Misterton Parish Church with a prize for the best-dressed tree and everyone is welcome to enter: clubs, societies, organisations, businesses, and individuals.

Decorate the tree in any way you wish as long as it has a Christmassy theme! The height of the tree should not be more than four feet (1.25metres). Any lights should be battery powered. Please include the name of your organisation or business on a sheet of card or paper no bigger than A4, with any other information you want to give; this will be displayed with the tree.

PARISH COUNCIL IN RECESS

There is no meeting of the Parish Council in August, traditionally the summer recess. The next meeting is on Thursday 14 September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, This is preceded by an open forum beginning at 7.15pm when residents can ask questions about any matter relating to the village.

CHECK YOUR ELECTION DETAILS!

West Stockwith residents are urged to check their electoral registration details or risk losing their chance to vote in future elections. Bassetlaw District Council is carrying out its annual canvass, which keeps the electoral register up-to-date to identify who risks losing their vote at elections, and to encourage them to register before it’s too late.

Recent home movers, in particular, are urged to check their details. Research by the Electoral Commission has found that recent home movers are less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time. In Great Britain, 92% of those who have lived in their home for 16 years will be registered, compared with 36% of people who have lived at an address for less than a year.

Information on registering to vote is available on the Electoral Commission website (www.electoralcommission.org.uk). Residents with questions about their registration status can contact Bassetlaw’s electoral services team on 01909 533 252.

● Voters need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in some elections. This applies to:

  • local elections and by-elections
  • Police & Crime Commissioner elections
  • UK parliamentary by-elections
  • Recall petitions
  • UK General Elections (from October 2023).

If you don't have accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate. Call Bassetlaw’s electoral services team on 01909 533 252 for more information.

TWO CONVICTIONS SHOW NEED FOR PROPER LICENSING

A Retford couple have been fined and ordered to pay costs, totalling over £3000, for breeding and selling puppies without a licence, following an investigation by Bassetlaw District Council. This is a licensable activity under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018. And the owners of a former Retford cattery have been given a Community Order and must pay costs of more than £2600 after repeatedly breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order.

There are regulations on breeding and keeping animals. A breeding licence is required for anyone breeding three or more litters in a 12-month period and/or anyone that breeds dogs and advertises a business of selling dogs. Licence holders must also display their licence on any advertisements and on their premises as well as keep any records such as registrations of dogs and puppies, which can be seen by Council officers at any time. For more information on animal licences, go to www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/legal-and-licensing/animal-activity-licences/
