WALKERS RAISE OVER £3000 FOR ALZHEIMER’S (+ pic)

Three Misterton women completed the gruelling 26-mile trek across the North York Moors last month in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. Congratulations go to the three intrepid walkers (left to right) Nicky Taylor, Nikki Jaggard-Smith, and Gill Smith. Between them they raised over £3300. Well done! Anyone wanting to support the Alzheimer’s Society can donate at www.alzheimers.org.uk

LOCAL CHURCHES FUND ‘TREASURE HUNT’ (pic)

Seven churches in the locality are working together to encourage cyclists, walkers, car drivers, pram pushers, horseback riders – anyone with legs or wheels – to join in the sponsored trek around local churches. This annual Ride & Stride is organised by Notts Historic Churches Trust (nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/ridestride/): half the sponsorship raised goes to NHCT, the other half to the churches of participants’ choice.

But, as a special feature this year, local churches are funding a ‘treasure hunt’. Pick up a question form at any of the seven churches and ‘hunt’ for the answer at each location. The local churches taking part are:

  • Beckingham, All Saints’ Parish Church
  • Clayworth, St Peter’s Parish Church
  • Gringley, St Peter & St Pauls’ Parish Church
  • Misterton, All Saints’ Parish Church (pictured)
  • Misterton, Methodist Church
  • Walkeringham, St Mary’s Parish Church
  • West Stockwith, St Mary’s Parish Church.

Leave the completed answer form in any of these participating churches. The person who answers most questions correctly will receive a £35 voucher (or prize to the value of £35).

Alongside the Ride & Stride event is a photographic competition. Take a camera, take a picture, and send it in with your sponsorship paperwork. Prizes are £75, £50, and £25. Details of this and other competitions are at nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Competitions2023.pdf

CHECK YOUR ELECTION DETAILS!

West Stockwith residents are urged to check their electoral registration details or risk losing their chance to vote in future elections. Bassetlaw District Council is carrying out its annual canvass, which keeps the electoral register up-to-date to identify who risks losing their vote at elections, and to encourage them to register before it’s too late.

Recent home movers, in particular, are urged to check their details. Research by the Electoral Commission has found that recent home movers are less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time. In Great Britain, 92% of those who have lived in their home for 16 years will be registered, compared with 36% of people who have lived at an address for less than a year.

Information on registering to vote is available on the Electoral Commission website (www.electoralcommission.org.uk). Residents with questions about their registration status can contact Bassetlaw’s electoral services team on 01909 533 252.

● Voters need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in some elections. This applies to:

  • local elections and by-elections
  • Police & Crime Commissioner elections
  • UK parliamentary by-elections
  • Recall petitions
  • UK General Elections (from October 2023).

If you don't have accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate. Call Bassetlaw’s electoral services team on 01909 533 252 for more information.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2023

It may be four months away but not too soon to plan to enter the Christmas Tree Festival, part of the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights on Friday 1 December. The display of Christmas trees will be in Misterton Parish Church with a prize for the best-dressed tree and everyone is welcome to enter: clubs, societies, organisations, businesses, and individuals.

Decorate the tree in any way you wish as long as it has a Christmassy theme! The height of the tree should not be more than four feet (1.25metres). Any lights should be battery powered. Please include the name of your organisation or business on a sheet of card or paper no bigger than A4, with any other information you want to give; this will be displayed with the tree.

CONSULTATION ON BASSETLAW'S 17-YEAR PLAN

Residents of West Stockwith are invited to comment on Bassetlaw District Council’s Vision for Bassetlaw 2040. In December 2022, Bassetlaw District Council approved the development of a new vision for Bassetlaw to 2040. As an ambitious Council, it not only wants to maximise the return on major investments in our district - including the UK centre of excellence in vehicle technology research and safety testing at Gamston Airport, and West Burton chosen as the future home of the UK’s first prototype fusion energy plant - it also wants to secure more funding and inward investment to ensure that the whole of Bassetlaw benefits from the planned transformation.

Vision 2040 sets out both the Council’s long-term plans for the next 17 years, and a series of underpinning ambitions for the next four years. Residents, businesses, organisations, and community groups are invited to review Vision 2040 and to have their say on Council’s proposed strategic themes and ambitions. Each response will be carefully analysed and considered before being presented to full Council later in the year.

Please read Vision 2040 Bassetlaw before completing the consultation, which runs for six weeks and will close on 14 September 2023:

https://www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/about-us/bassetlaw-vision-2040/ Copies of the documents are also available from the Council's Customer Services Team (tel: 01909 533 533).

COUNCIL SEEKS CRITICAL DOMESTIC ABUSE ACCREDITATION

Over the last month, there were 148 domestic incidents in Bassetlaw that called for a response by Notts Police. Now, Bassetlaw District Council is doing more to tackle domestic abuse and provide extra support to survivors of domestic abuse.

The Council has taken the first steps to achieving Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA) Accreditation, a benchmark for how housing providers across the UK should respond to domestic abuse.

This includes a Council-wide audit of policies, procedures and practices, in addition to its entire workforce undergoing training that will increase awareness of the signs of domestic abuse, and how to support survivors. The Council is working alongside a domestic abuse specialist from Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid to achieve the accreditation. If successful, Bassetlaw will be the second council in Nottinghamshire to attain DAHA Accreditation.

● Notts Police’s current priorities are serious acquisitive crime including burglary, drugs supply and possession, and dangerous driving including speeding and off-road offences. Notts Police remind West Stockwith residents to report any incidents via 101 (or 999 while the incident is happening) or use the online reporting form on the home page at www.nottinghamshire.police.uk. Reporting incidents means that the Police can build up a picture of criminal activity in the village, which means more resources can be deployed.
