COFFEE CLUB RAISES FUNDS FOR CHURCH REFURBISHMENT (+ PIC)

Residents attending a monthly coffee morning held a Garden Party and raised £450 towards Misterton Parish Church’s refurbishment plans. Pictured handing over the cheque to Sue Pearce, Churchwarden (left), is Dorothy Richardson, who, with her husband John, hosted the garden party in July. Also pictured are members of the Tuesday Coffee Morning, who had helped at the Garden Party. Despite torrential rain, which turned to drizzle, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of those who braved the weather to support this worthy cause.

The Parish Church is designated by English Heritage as a building at risk

(historicengland.org.uk/advice/heritage-at-risk/search-register/list-entry/15166). There are plans to underpin the north wall and, in the north aisle, remodel the interior to provide a WC and kitchenette with café-style seating. The south aisle will be turned into a heritage centre, while the central pews will stay but the front choir stalls will be removed to provide flexible seating for performances.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS PLAN 3RD SUMMER EVENT

Volunteers running Misterton Library plan a third summer event – a Teddy Bears’ Picnic – on Wednesday 23 August from 2.30-4.30pm. Children are invited to bring along a favourite teddy bear, doll, or other toy to the free fun afternoon. Indoors if the weather isn’t good, children will be able to choose a book to read to their teddy/toy. There will be some simple craft activities based on colouring and dressing teddy bear cut-outs, teddy Olympics – teddy-ised versions of the games held at the Library, and making a teddy/toy picnic. Bring along a picnic blanket – and fingers crossed for good weather!

LOCAL CHURCHES FUND ‘TREASURE HUNT’ (pic)

Seven churches in the locality are working together to encourage cyclists, walkers, car drivers, pram pushers, horseback riders – anyone with legs or wheels – to join in the sponsored trek around local churches. This annual Ride & Stride is organised by Notts Historic Churches Trust (nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/ridestride/): half the sponsorship raised goes to NHCT, the other half to the churches of participants’ choice.

But, as a special feature this year, local churches are funding a ‘treasure hunt’. Pick up a question form at any of the seven churches (except Walkeringham) and ‘hunt’ for the answer at each location. The local churches taking part are:

  • Beckingham, All Saints’ Parish Church
  • Clayworth, St Peter’s Parish Church
  • Gringley, St Peter & St Pauls’ Parish Church
  • Misterton, All Saints’ Parish Church
  • Misterton, Methodist Church
  • Walkeringham, St Mary’s Parish Church
  • West Stockwith, St Mary’s Parish Church (pictured).

Leave the completed answer form in any of these participating churches (except Walkeringham). The person who answers most questions correctly will receive a £35 voucher (or prize to the value of £35).

Alongside the Ride & Stride event is a photographic competition. Take a camera, take a picture, and send it in with your sponsorship paperwork. Prizes are £75, £50, and £25. Details of this and other competitions are at nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Competitions2023.pdf
