INFORMATION SESSION ON AVOIDING FRAUD AND SCAMS

Staff of the Yorkshire Building Society in Gainsborough will be at a regular weekly Coffee Morning in Misterton to outline how to avoid being a victim of fraudsters. The Coffee Morning is on Thursday 14 September in the Methodist Hall, from 10.00-11.00am. All are welcome – just make a donation towards refreshments. The Coffee Morning is held on Thursday mornings every week.

LOCAL CHURCHES FUND ‘TREASURE HUNT’

Seven churches in the locality are working together to encourage cyclists, walkers, car drivers, pram pushers, horseback riders – anyone with legs or wheels – to join in the sponsored trek around local churches. This annual Ride & Stride is organised by Notts Historic Churches Trust (nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/ridestride/): half the sponsorship raised goes to NHCT, the other half to the churches of participants’ choice.

But, as a special feature this year, local churches are funding a ‘treasure hunt’. Pick up a question form at any of the seven churches (except Walkeringham) and ‘hunt’ for the answer at each location. The local churches taking part are:

  • Beckingham, All Saints’ Parish Church
  • Clayworth, St Peter’s Parish Church
  • Gringley, St Peter & St Pauls’ Parish Church
  • Misterton, All Saints’ Parish Church
  • Misterton, Methodist Church
  • Walkeringham, St Mary’s Parish Church
  • West Stockwith, St Mary’s Parish Church (pictured).

Leave the completed answer form in any of these participating churches (except Walkeringham). The person who answers most questions correctly will receive a £35 voucher (or prize to the value of £35).

Alongside the Ride & Stride event is a photographic competition. Take a camera, take a picture, and send it in with your sponsorship paperwork. Prizes are £75, £50, and £25. Details of this and other competitions are at nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Competitions2023.pdf

LOCAL PLAN’S FINAL CONSULTATION – DEADLINE EXTENDED

Misterton residents are invited to view the latest round of changes to Bassetlaw’s Local Plan. This final stage of consultation comes after the independent Planning Inspectors issued their findings, following the conclusion of the public hearings in January this year. These findings are known as Main Modifications and are a series of amendments that the Planning Inspectors think are necessary to make the Local Plan ‘sound’ and legally compliant. These include:

  • a slight reduction in the amount of new housing needed each year from 10,476 to 9,720 dwellings to reflect new evidence relating to jobs growth
  • a new strategic policy focusing on large brownfield sites in the countryside
  • a clearer framework for infill development within rural settlements and to clarify the approach to housing growth in the countryside

The Council is consulting on the Main Modifications over the next six weeks, with the consultation period extended until 5.00pm on Tuesday 3 October 2023. The full list of Main Modifications and a consultation response form is available online via: https://www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/main-modifications. Copies of all the consultation materials are also available in Misterton Library. The Local Plan will then be prepared for adoption, implementing the recommendations set out in the Inspectors’ Report. The Council will then need to take a decision on whether to adopt the Local Plan.

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:

  • community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
  • housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
  • a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
  • the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
  • Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
  • home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)
  • minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

Plans are underway for the village’s Remembrance Day service, and for a festive Christmas event. On Sunday 12 November, the Act of Remembrance will start with meeting at the soldier memorial at the junction of Main Street and North Carr Road at 10.45am. Wreaths will be laid there then in the Parish Church.

The Parish Council and Parish Church will hold a joint Christmas event on Saturday 9 December. Plans are still underway but it will be held in St Mary’s Parish Church with the Salvation Army in attendance. Further detailed information will be available nearer the time.

STEP PROGRESS REPORT
The UKAEA (UK Atomic Energy Authority) is holding its next community event in Retford Town Hall on Tuesday 12 September. The doors will be open to West Stockwith residents from 4.00-7.00pm.

As with previous events, members of the STEP team will be there to chat with you, provide more information about the STEP programme, and answer any questions you might have. Staff will also be showcasing the first draft of the site Masterplan to show the UKAEA's initial thoughts on how the site might change in the decades ahead and would really like residents' feedback and thoughts on this. The site team will also be available to talk through the characterisation work, which has been going on at the site in recent months; colleagues from EDF Energy will be available to talk about the decommissioning and demolition works at West Burton.
