LIBRARY HOLDS TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC (+ pic)

A Teddy Bears’ Picnic was the third event at Misterton Library this summer. The aim of the events, linked to the national Summer Reading Challenge, was to encourage children, young people, and families to enjoy visiting the Library and reading books.

There was a selection of games and activities for children (pictured) and families.

The Library is run on a day-to-day basis by volunteers, under the management of the

Parish Council. The team of volunteers, who plan and put on the events, are keen to ensure the Library remains at the heart of the village life, whether that’s providing a warm space and hot drink in the winter, somewhere to reminisce about the past, or free fun for bored children. More volunteers are needed – whether you can offer one session a month or several. If you have any ideas, call into the Library and pass them on. From Saturday 2 September, the Library will be open every Saturday morning from 9.30am - 12.30pm as well as Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 2.00 – 5.00pm.

The next event is Halloween-themed and is on Tuesday 31 October. Further details will be available nearer the time. But if last year’s ‘spooktacular’ was anything to go by, it was a good excuse to dress up!

Contact details for the Library are: tel 890646, e-mail mistertonlibraryvolunteers@outlook.com.

RIDE & STRIDE REGISTRATION OPEN

Registration forms for the annual Ride & Stride sponsored trip around local churches are now available in Misterton Parish Church. Alongside them are forms for the ‘treasure hunt’ – seven questions to answer by visiting seven local churches.

Ride & Stride is open to cyclists, walkers, car drivers, pram pushers, horseback riders – anyone with legs or wheels – and is organised by Notts Historic Churches Trust (nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/ridestride/): half the sponsorship raised goes to NHCT, the other half to the churches of participants’ choice.

The treasure hunt forms can be picked up at any of the churches that are open (Walkeringham is closed but the answer to the question can be found from outside the building). Then leave the completed answer form in any of the open participating churches. The person who answers most questions correctly will receive a £35 voucher (or prize to the value of £35).

Alongside the Ride & Stride event is a photographic competition. Take a camera, take a picture, and send it in with your sponsorship paperwork. Prizes are £75, £50, and £25. Details of this and other competitions are at nottshistoricchurchestrust.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Competitions2023.pdf

SAY CHEESE! SPECIAL EVENT FOR ‘CHEESE-OHOLICS’!

Retford Market always has a great cheese selection – so these will feature in a special cheese festival on Saturday 16 September. Alongside this, cafes will have cheesy offerings, and Retford Arts Hub will feature cheese earrings and cheese boards. To decorate your own cheese plate, pop along to The Pottery on Market Square for sessions at 10.00am and 12noon.

The event coincides with Big Market Day with the regular craft and farmers’ markets, as well as the traditional Saturday market. There’s a circus skills workshop with stilt-walker and the Hathersage Brass Band.

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:

  • community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
  • housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
  • a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
  • the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
  • Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
  • home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.
