LIBRARY HELD HALLOWEEN EVENT (+ pix)

Volunteers at Misterton Library put on a special Halloween event. And ‘Spooky Do’ attracted some 50 grown-ups and children for an afternoon of Halloween fun. Five new Library members were signed up, and one new volunteer. Anyone interested in volunteering, giving up just a few hours each month to help keep the village Library open, should call in during opening hours for more information, or ring 890646.

BE ALERTED TO COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

Notts Police is launching ‘Notts ALERT’ - an app providing updates to the community about activity going on in the area. So go to www.nottsalerts.co.uk and sign up. Once registered, you can select which organisations you wish to hear from: from Trading Standards to the Fire & Rescue Service. There’s also the facility to join or set up a Neighbourhood Watch group.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN UPDATE

The review of Misterton’s Neighbourhood Plan, agreed by residents in a referendum in 2019, has been through another round of consultation with statutory agencies, organised by Bassetlaw District Council. Now the District Council has appointed an independent inspector to further review it. The inspector may come back with suggested amendments. Once these are agreed, the Review Plan will go to a public referendum once again. This is likely to be in early 2024.

There has been no change to the five development sites in the village, agreed in 2019. But what’s new are a Design Code that will give developers design principles to follow in different parts of the village, and identification of key views and significant green gaps that should be maintained to keep the rural features of the village.

BOOST FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
Local businesses can get a significant boost to their growth plans, thanks to the launch of the Bassetlaw Accelerator project. The project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and East Midlands Chamber. The programme offers Bassetlaw businesses:

  • business adviser support
  • training
  • access to finance, including specialised consultancy through growth voucher support and grants
  • networks for collaboration with fellow businesses, including through the national Help to Grow: Management Course, North Nottinghamshire Manufacturing Network and Retford Business Forum.

Businesses are invited to hear about support on offer at the Bassetlaw Accelerator launch event on Monday 13 November at Retford Enterprise Centre. Businesses wishing to learn more about the Accelerator project in Bassetlaw can do so by signing up to the 13 November event or visiting the programme (programme (www.d2n2growthhub.co.uk/accelerator/) and choosing Bassetlaw as their district.

LIBRARY HOSTS ‘MISTERTON REMEMBERS’ EXHIBITION

Misterton Library is recruiting more volunteers to help keep the village facility alive and thriving. There is a recruitment afternoon on Thursday 9 November from 2.00-5.00pm, accompanied by an exhibition, Misterton Remembers… the 1940s. Local historian, David Seymour will give a talk on the village in the post-war years. The exhibition will remain in the Library until the session on Saturday 18 November ends.

The exhibition and illustrated talk isn’t just for potential volunteers – anyone can call in. But if you have a few hours to spare each month, come along and find out more. Learn new skills, get some work experience, make new friends – there’s a lot on offer and just a few hours a week will mean that the Library can stay open and expand the activities on offer.

HARVEST FESTIVAL GIVES DONATIONS TO FOOD BANK

The annual Harvest Festival at St Mary’s Parish Church saw generous donations of provisions, which have been passed on to Bassetlaw Food Bank. These will help the hundreds of people across Bassetlaw, who are finding it difficult to make ends meet. In 2022, the Food Bank supported 2304 households with emergency food parcels.

There is no single reason why people find themselves experiencing food insecurity. Redundancy, illness, benefit delays, debt, zero-hours contracts, and domestic abuse are just some of the reasons why people, including many families with children, are referred to the Food Bank. The ongoing cost-of-living crisis has made things more difficult. More households are turning to food banks, including many who have never needed to before. Many thanks to all those who gave so generously at the Harvest Festival.
