SWITCHING ON THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS (+ pic)

This year’s Christmas Lights switch-on is on Friday 1 December at 6.00pm, so get your Christmas jumper out of storage and join us at Church Meadow for mulled wine and drinks for children, courtesy of the Parish Council. There’s a selection of local stallholders – anyone wanting a space should contact Nikki on 891629 or nikki.jaggard-smith@misterton-notts-pc.gov.uk. Santa will be there so come along and say hello and give him your Christmas list!

The Christmas fund-raising group, Sparkles, has ceased operations and has passed its lamp-post motifs to the Council last month. But it was too late for the Council to get them checked and apply for a licence this year, but councillors will assess in January what needs to be done for next Christmas.

Alongside the lights switch-on is a Christmas Tree Festival. Pictured is last year’s winning tree. Everyone - individuals, organisations, and businesses - is invited to enter. Dress a Christmas tree, which will be on display in the Parish Church from Friday 1 December for the weekend. The height of the tree should not be more than four feet (1.25metres). Any lights should be battery powered. Please include the name of your organisation or business on a sheet of card or paper no bigger than A4, with any other information you want to give; this will be displayed with the tree. Bring trees to the Parish Church between 2.00-4.00pm on Friday 1 December. There's a chance to win a prize for the best-dressed entry. There’s another chance for people to see the Christmas Tree entries on Saturday 2 December (during the Church’s annual Christmas Coffee Morning from 10.00am to 12noon).

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

Small Business Saturday on 2 December is a chance to show appreciation for the small businesses that contribute to our community. In Misterton, Grove House Stables (GHS) LLP, which has previously been recognised as one of the UK’s top 100 Small Business Saturday organisations, invites local businesses to have a stall in its meeting room (£10 per stall), 10.00am-4.00pm. To take up this offer, call 890802 to reserve a space. Bassetlaw District Councill will be present with a range of information on its support for businesses.

GHS is also having an open day, where staff will be demonstrating a range of different activities and hosting different businesses and charities, celebrating the diversity and talents of our local small business community. Customers across the UK go out and support all types of small businesses: online, in offices, and in stores. Many small businesses take part in the day by hosting events and giving discounts. Politicians, including the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition have all publicly supported Small Business Saturday.

VILLAGE MAGAZINE GETS NATIONAL AWARD

A magazine dedicated to what’s going on in Misterton and West Stockwith – and things of interest to local residents from the local area – has won the bronze award in a national competition for parish publications. Commenting on Misterton & West Stockwith Parish News, the judges said: “Nice title and font and consistent appearance. Nice and ‘crisp’ and contrasty. Overall – a very readable and professional publication”.

Edited by Hazel Brand, she commented: “This is a team effort. Without contributions from so many organisations and individuals, month after month, Parish News wouldn't be what it is today—a real community publication. So thanks to everyone for their ongoing support.” Parish News (60p per issue) is delivered free to subscribers (call 891376 to sign up) or is on sale in Misterton Post Office – just ask at the counter.
