REMEMBER A LOVED ONE THIS CHRISTMAS

Leave a message to or for someone you’ve loved and maybe lost this year on the Memory Tree in Misterton Parish Church. Gift tags are supplied - and all those named on the tree will be remembered in prayers at 2023’s last service of the year at the Parish Church on Sunday 24 December.

The Memory Tree is up and ready for messages. A small donation to the work of the Parish Church is appreciated. Leave it in the secure Offertory Box by the magazine rack.

SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

A number of Misterton’s small businesses will be exhibiting at a special event for Small Business Saturday on 2 December at Grove House Farm. Bassetlaw District Council and Retford Business Forum will be represented, with information on grants and opportunities for local businesses. The event is from 10.00am to 3.00pm.

Proprietor of Grove House Stables, Andrew Stennett, will be giving a series of talks from 10.00am, including information on what the business can offer home-schooled children. Want to learn to ride, or brush up on something specific? Book a free 15-minute chat to talk about it. For children over 3, there’s a chance to tell the pony Biscuit what they’d like for Christmas before adding the wish to the Stables’ Christmas tree.

Grove House Stables (GHS) LLP has previously been recognised as one of the UK’s top 100 Small Business Saturday organisations. Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to 'shop local' and support small businesses in their communities.

FREE PITCH AT CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING

Have a free pitch at the Parish Church’s Christmas Coffee Morning on Saturday 2 December – just make a donation to the Church.

RESIDENTS INVITED TO JOIN SPEEDWATCH TEAM

Residents, who are concerned about speeding through the village, are invited to contact Misterton Parish Council to volunteer as a member of the Community Speedwatch group. Parish councils have to buy the speed gun and equipment, costing around £500, but this is only a good use of public funds if residents support the scheme. If interested, get in touch with the Parish Clerk on (01427) 890780 or e-mail theclerk@misterton-notts-pc.gov.uk. The scheme calls for three residents per shift, which, Notts Police recommended, should be only for 15-20 minutes in one place before moving on. The Parish Council is committed to buying the kit if there is sufficient interest in reviving a local SpeedWatch group. Training is by Notts Police and other villages, including West Stockwith, are part of the scheme.

GET CRAFTY – MAKE YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS WREATH!

There’s a chance to make your own Christmas wreath with all materials supplied (but bring your own secateurs) on Thursday 7 December in the Church Room, Church Lane, Misterton, at 7.00pm. The cost is £17.50 and includes materials and a light supper. Contact Shirley to book (07974 022473).

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:

  • community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
  • housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
  • a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
  • the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
  • Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
  • home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)
  • minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

For further details on any of the above please contact BAC on 01777 709650 or by e-mail (enquiries@actioncentre.org.uk). Further information can be found on the website: www.bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk.

GREEN GROUP SUGGESTS GROWING YOUR OWN

How to become more self-sufficient and grow your own food is the topic in the latest leaflet from the joint Misterton and West Stockwith Parish Councils’ Green Group. The leaflet has been delivered to all houses in the two villages – anyone who has mislaid their copy can get another from The Misterton Centre.

There are ways of growing that anyone can manage—especially children. Growing your own produce at home can save money and time—when ready, the produce is right there ready to pick. No need to go shopping! If you live in a flat, with little garden, or have a garden but it’s too much to manage, space on a window sill is fine for small things like herbs, lettuce, and cress; smaller vegetables like tomatoes can be grown in plant pots in the kitchen. If you have limited room for planting outside, a hanging basket can give growing space but hanging baskets do need watering frequently. Grow tomatoes, potatoes, or strawberries in grow bags. You can get ready-filled plastic grow bags (reusable) or buy grow bags that need filling with soil. For more deep-rooted vegetables, such as carrots or potatoes, you can also use a garden dustbin.

MORE VOLUNTEERS WANTED TO JOIN SPEEDWATCH TEAM

Residents, who are concerned about speeding through the village, are invited to contact West Stockwith Parish Council to volunteer as a member of the Community Speedwatch group. Parish councils have to buy the speed gun and equipment, costing around £500, but this is only a good use of public funds if residents support the scheme. WINTER FESTIVAL OF LIGHT

Retford is holding a Winter Festival of Light on Thursday 14 December, beginning with a parade from the Wonderland bookshop to the Market Square, starting at 4.30pm. Local singer, Hannah Harris, will lead carol singing until Santa arrives. Alongside this, there are two stilt-walking ice queens, a free children’s fairground ride – and shops will be open for late-night shopping until 8.00pm.

And there’s free parking in car parks owned by Bassetlaw District Council after 2.00pm from Friday 1 December to Monday 1 January.
