CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH-ON (+ 2 pix)

Hundreds of residents turned out for Misterton Parish Council’s annual Christmas lights switch-on. Despite the cold weather, Harworth Brass Band got everyone in the mood for the count-down when Santa switched on the lights. He then holed up in his grotto (pictured) with plenty of ho-ho-hos! In the Parish Church was a bumper number of entries to the Christmas Tree Festival. The winners of the best-dressed tree were, jointly, Misterton Library volunteers and the monthly Tuesday coffee morning group. Chair of Misterton Parish Council, Peter Marsden, is pictured pinning the winner’s rosette onto the Library tree. The prize for the ‘junior’ entry went to Misterton Primary School. Congratulations to them – and to all those who entered a tree.

REMEMBER A LOVED ONE THIS CHRISTMAS

Leave a message to or for someone you’ve loved and maybe lost this year on the Memory Tree in Misterton Parish Church. Gift tags are supplied - and all those named on the tree will be remembered in prayers at 2023’s last service of the year at the Parish Church on Sunday 24 December.

The Memory Tree is up and ready for messages. A small donation to the work of the Parish Church is appreciated. Leave it in the secure Offertory Box by the magazine rack.

WINTER FESTIVAL OF LIGHT

Retford is holding a Winter Festival of Light on Thursday 14 December, beginning with a parade from the Wonderland bookshop to the Market Square, starting at 4.30pm. Local singer, Hannah Harris, will lead carol singing until Santa arrives. Alongside this, there are two stilt-walking ice queens, a free children’s fairground ride – and shops will be open for late-night shopping until 8.00pm.

And there’s free parking in car parks owned by Bassetlaw District Council after 2.00pm from Friday 1 December to Monday 1 January.

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:

  • community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
  • housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
  • a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
  • the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
  • Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
  • home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)
  • minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

For further details on any of the above please contact BAC on 01777 709650 or by e-mail (enquiries@actioncentre.org.uk). Further information can be found on the website: www.bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk.

KEEP WEST STOCKWITH TIDY: NO FLY-POSTING!

Fly-posting is unlawful. Any sign, placard, notice, leaflet, banner, or anything similar that can be seen from the highway or any public place may (with certain exceptions) be classed as fly-posting. Bassetlaw District Council is updating its fly-posting procedure and items may be removed by Council officers or the Highways Authority. A fixed penalty notice may be issued or the fly-poster may be liable to prosecution.

The District Council’s fly-posting procedure is based on legislation and has been developed to support its commitment to creating decent and clean neighbourhoods and to take enforcement action against anti-social behaviour and environmental crime. Fly-posting is illegal: it is not only unsightly, but also gives an impression of neglect and can attract other forms of vandalism and anti-social behaviour leading to the decline of an area. Fly-posting creates litter, which spoils the environment; it is a form of illegal advertising that puts those who advertise legally at an unfair disadvantage. Finally, it can obscure important traffic signs or create an obstruction to pedestrians and/or motorists. A business or organisation may advertise on its own premises providing there is nothing to distract drivers.

NOMINATE A BASSETLAW ACHIEVER (+ pic)

It’s time to nominate someone for a Bassetlaw Achievers Award 2024. The Awards are given to Bassetlaw people, who are serving the community by their efforts for charity; for individual achievements; for sport or group activities; or to those who have overcome adversity to lead a normal life.

If you would like to nominate an individual or a group, contact District Cllr Hazel Brand (891376) for an application form. Requests should be returned to the District Council by Friday 9 February 2024. Last year’s achievers included Nikki Jaggard-Smith from Misterton (left) and Helen Nixon from West Stockwith.
