The Church provides the venue for the Christmas tree festival and use of the kitchen and WCs in the Church Room. Each organisation will receive £177 – so many thanks to all who supported the event. Thanks also to everyone who donated many of the prizes to the Cancer Research stall. £387 was raised and has been forwarded to that charity.

80TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY LANDINGS

Misterton Parish Council plans to support the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings by joining in the national commemorations on Thursday 6 June. The event is still at the planning stage but there will be a family picnic (bring your own) on the old school field at 6.00pm, followed by lighting the beacon and reading the national proclamation at 8.30pm. There will be live music of the era during the picnic and the Parish Council is hoping for a display of period vehicles and provision of a bar. Anyone who would like to bring an old vehicle is asked to contact the Parish Council’s Events Working Group on 07889 842 862.

LIBRARY VISITORS SHOULD LEAVE DOGS AT HOME

Members of Misterton Parish Council, which runs the Library on behalf of Inspire, have agreed that only guide dogs and assistance dogs should be permitted in the Library. An assistance a dog is one trained to assist a person who has a disability or disabling condition.

If there is the demand for it, the Parish Council will consider providing the means to tie up dogs outside, though not attached to the listed building.

WEST STOCKWITH’S BIG GARDEN BIRD WATCH

With numbers of British birds falling, there’s no better time to see how they’re doing in our area. Between 26 and 28 January, choose just one hour to record the birds that land in your garden. Record the highest number of each bird species at any one time. Go to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) website to sign up. Those who do, get an exclusive RSPB shop discount and a free digital or printed Birdwatch guide (www.rspb.org.uk).

Nationally, over 500,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch last year, counting 9.1m birds. House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts of these were down by 57% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979.
