ANNUAL SNOWDROP CAFÉ OPEN
See the carpet of snowdrops in the churchyard of All Saints’ Parish Church, Misterton, then call into the Snowdrop Café on Saturday 18 February in the Church Room, 12 noon – 2.00pm, for warming refreshments. Hot drinks, soup, puds, and snacks are all on offer. Proceeds go towards maintenance of the listed church building.
FAMOUS FOLK FROM MISTERTON (+ pic)
The next special event at Misterton Library is an exhibition and illustrated talk by local historian, Davd Seymour, on famous Misterton folk. The talk is on 29 February (2.00 – 4.30pm); the exhibition will run for a month afterwards.
Among a number of famous folk, Misterton has two notable women. Did you know that Nurse Kitty Jollands is one of the few women named on a WW1 war memorial? She is on Misterton’s cenotaph and is buried in Misterton Cemetery. Then there’s Henrietta Stockdale, daughter of a Misterton vicar, who is feted in her adopted country of South Africa where she set up a hospital in the mining town of Kimberley and established the first school of nursing.
These will be among the famous folk from the village that will be the subject of the talk and exhibition, following the success of the ‘Misterton Remembers’ exhibition and talk in November.
● Every Wednesday, there’s Rhyme Time for pre-school children, Misterton Library, 2.30-3.15pm. And on the second Saturday each month, there’s a craft session from 10.00am-12 noon. All materials are provided.
BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE
Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:
- community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
- housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
- a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
- the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
- Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
- home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)
- minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.
BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.
