WHAT’S ON THIS EASTER? (+ pic)

There’s a traditional Easter Day service for the churches in the north-east of Bassetlaw on Sunday 31 March at West Stockwith Parish Church at 11.00am. In the lead-up to Easter, on Maundy Thursday there’s a meal and readings to reflect on the Last Supper at Gringley Parish Church at 7.00pm. It’s free but ring 01777 818823 to book to assist with catering. This is followed on Good Friday by a vigil in Misterton Parish Church at 2.00pm.

On Tuesday 2 April, the volunteers at Misterton Library are organising an event with Easter bunnies. Pictured are some of the rabbits in the making. They took up residence in the Library on 7 March but the volunteers think they may breed and increase in numbers! Some may escape on 21 March so children and families are asked to help find them and bring them back to the Library - for the reward of a creme egg or carrot. On 2 April from 2.30 -4.30, there will be a range of egg and rabbit Easter activities with Easter egg rewards and refreshments. There’s free face painting on offer as well.

The Chesterfield Canal Trust is running Easter cruises on Sunday 31 March from the Chequers Inn at Ranby (DN22 8HT) on the Seth Ellis. There will be two-hour cruises at 10.30am and 2.00pm, priced at £14 or £10 for under 16s, or a 40-minute cruise at 1.00pm costing £4.50 or £3. For more details, and to book, go to chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk.

● The Trust is now collecting photographs for its 2025 calendar. To submit photos of the canal, e-mail publicity@chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk.

MISTERTON TO COMMEMORATE D-DAY LANDINGS

On the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, Thursday 6 June, Misterton Parish Council is organising a commemorative event. It will start with a bring-your-own family picnic on the old school field at 6.00pm. Everyone is invited to wear period costume – with a prize for the best-turned out outfit. There will be a singer reprising some well-known songs from the 1940s, old vehicles, and a bar. If you have a suitable vehicle to bring, contact the Vice-chair of the Parish Council, Cllr Alex Bland, on 07889 842862.

At 8.30pm, it will be time to light the beacon on Jubilee Garden. Cllr Mike Robertson will read the national proclamation.

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:

  • community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
  • housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
  • a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
  • the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
  • Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.
