VILLAGE JUDGING IN JUNE + (pic)
Judging Misterton’s entry in the Best Kept Village competition is this month, between 3 and 30 June. Shortlisted entries then see the second round of judging between 4 and 31 July. Misterton parish councillors have committed time to tidy up the main entrances to the village at the very beginning of the month. They have been litter-picking, pulling out weeds, cleaning road signs and street furniture—and more. Cllr Nikki Jaggard-Smith is pictured cleaning a road sign in a previous entry to the competition. The Parish Council asks all residents to help take part in the competition by keeping property frontages neat and tidy—and to check side roads. If anyone sees a ‘grot spot’, let the Parish Clerk know: ring 890646 or e-mail theclerk@misterton-notts-pc.gov.uk.
In addition, judges will look at a wide range of community facilities, like bus shelters and stops, playing fields, verges and gutters, canal, churches and churchyards, notice boards, signs, street furniture, and the school and surroundings. Commercial enterprises and services are included, too: shops and adverts, public houses and parking areas, farm buildings and farmyards, and work entrances. Obvious community effort is recognised by the judges. A clean, tidy, cared-for village not only adds to the value of properties but shows community spirit in action!
ADVICE ON BONFIRES
Anyone can have a bonfire to burn domestic rubbish – but if it stops neighbours from enjoying their property, it is considered a nuisance and can result in prosecution. Plastics, hazardous waste, and commercial waste should not be burnt in the garden. If burning garden waste, make sure that it’s dry so that the smoke isn’t too bad. But think about composting or the garden waste collection scheme before striking a match.
If you consider a bonfire to be a nuisance, contact the Environmental Health Department at Bassetlaw District Council (www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/environmental-health/smoke-control/bonfires/complaining/) or ring 01909 533 533.

DISTRICT COUNCIL HAS NEW CHAIR
Cllr Sue Shaw was sworn in as the new Chair of Bassetlaw District Council for the municipal year 2024/25 during the Council’s Annual General Meeting (Wednesday 15 May). With family connections in north-east Bassetlaw, she will be an advocate for rural areas. Cllr Shaw succeeds Cllr Deborah Merryweather and will be assisted by Cllr Tony Eaton as Vice-Chairman. Membership of the Council’s committees and appointments to outside bodies was also confirmed at the AGM. The Leader of the Council is Cllr James Naish (Labour).
ENERGY EFFICIENCY UPGRADES
Bassetlaw District Council is urging residents to apply for free upgrades to help make their homes warmer and cheaper to heat through £2.1m of Government-funded Home Upgrade Grant Phase 2 (HUG 2) for the coming year. Homeowners, who are not on mains gas and are on low incomes, may be eligible for energy efficiency improvements which could include wall and loft insulation, solar PV panels and air source heat pumps.
Work on up to 20 projects in the district are due to get underway in the coming months with the HUG 2 scheme, aiming to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions from residents’ homes. The scheme is running until the end of March 2025 with funding available on a first-come-first-served basis. Residents may be eligible for the latest round of Home Upgrade Grants if they meet the following criteria:
- live in a property with no gas supply and an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, E, F, or G
- earn a combined household income of less than £36,000 per annum.
Bassetlaw District Council is working with Nottingham Energy Partnership (NEP) to administer the scheme. For more information or to apply, please contact Nottingham Energy Partnership on 0115 947 2207 or visit www.nottenergy.com/projects/homeupgradegrant
