REFERENDUM ON REVIEW NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN
Misterton’s polling station opened on 23 May for residents to vote on whether Bassetlaw District Council should use the Review Neighbourhood Plan to help determine planning applications. The original Neighbourhood Plan was approved at a referendum in 2019. Learning from other parishes and tightening some loopholes led to the first Review, which was completed this year and passed by an independent planning inspector.
Just 157 people voted for and 27 against. The turn-out was a lowly 10% but a simple majority of those voting is all that’s required to give the Neighbourhood Plan full weight in determining planning applications. The reviewed version has no new housing sites but it does have new policies, including on infill, key views and green spaces, and a design code to help guide the design of houses in different locations in the village.
D-DAY EVENTS IN VILLAGE
Events organised to commemorate the D-Day landings on 6 June are as follows:
- 5.30pm - illustrated talk by local historian, David Seymour, on the part Misterton played in the D-Day landings
- 6.00pm - family picnic on the Old School Field. BYO picnic and seats. There will be a bar
- 6.30pm – songs and readings of the period
- 8.00pm – draw raffle and presentation of Misterton Parish Council’s Village Champion awards
- 8.25pm – gather at Jubilee Garden
- 8.30pm – reading of the National Proclamation.

Everyone is invited to take a look at the handiwork of pupils of Misterton School and their representations of this special anniversary, which are on the external railings. And while at the Old School Field, visit the community garden (at the bottom of the field). It is open all year for anyone wishing to have a quiet space in which to think and reflect.

SUPPORT FOR VETERANS
While preparations to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings on Thursday 6 June are underway, Bassetlaw District Council is making sure members of the armed forces community are well supported, acknowledged for their contribution, and able to access key services.
A new Armed Forces Plan for the next four years has been backed by Cabinet members, building on the Council’s Armed Forces Covenant to make sure help is there for former personnel and their families who need it. According to the 2021 census, nearly 5000 Bassetlaw residents have served in the forces or the reserves, the third highest total in the county after Nottingham City and Newark & Sherwood. Bassetlaw District Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant and the Council is working hard to retain its Gold Employer Recognition award, which it achieved in August 2022. This recognises its work to help veterans with access to employment opportunities and inspiring others to do the same.
ADVICE ON BONFIRES
Anyone can have a bonfire to burn domestic rubbish – but if it stops neighbours from enjoying their property, it is considered a nuisance and can result in prosecution. Plastics, hazardous waste, and commercial waste should not be burnt in the garden. If burning garden waste, make sure that it’s dry so that the smoke isn’t too bad. But think about composting or the garden waste collection scheme before striking a match.
If you consider a bonfire to be a nuisance, contact the Environmental Health Department at Bassetlaw District Council (www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/environmental-health/smoke-control/bonfires/complaining/) or ring 01909 533 533.
