PARISH COUNCIL THANKS VILLAGE CHAMPIONS (+ pix)
Misterton Parish Council presented two residents with certificates and prize money for their successful nominations as Village Champions for 2023. The awards were made during the D-Day commemorations (Thursday 6 June). The under-18 award went to Seth Swindin, pictured receiving his prize from Parish Chair, Cllr Peter Marsden. Seth had been nominated for his volunteering at Misterton Primary School.
The over-18 award went to Steve Lee, who has kept the School's football team going over 14 years. Congratulations to them both!
Events organised to commemorate the D-Day landings included an illustrated talk by local historian, David Seymour, on the part Misterton played in the D-Day landings, a family picnic with live music and readings of the period. The raffle in aid of Royal British Legion was drawn and raised £275 for the charity. After presentation of the Village Champion awards, residents moved to Jubilee Garden to see the beacon lit and the National Proclamation read by Cllr Mike Robertson.
DONATION HELPS SCHOOL DEVELOP ART STUDIO
A donation of £150 from North Notts Lions has been given to Misterton Primary School. The money will be used towards buying the resources to set up a dedicated art studio.
ADVICE ON BONFIRES
Anyone can have a bonfire to burn domestic rubbish – but if it stops neighbours from enjoying their property, it is considered a nuisance and can result in prosecution. Plastics, hazardous waste, and commercial waste should not be burnt in the garden. If burning garden waste, make sure that it’s dry so that the smoke isn’t too bad. But think about composting or the garden waste collection scheme before striking a match.
If you consider a bonfire to be a nuisance, contact the Environmental Health Department at Bassetlaw District Council (www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/environmental-health/smoke-control/bonfires/complaining/) or ring 01909 533 533.
BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE
Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:
- community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
- housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
- a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
- the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
- Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
- home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service)
- minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.
BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

PLEA TO PICK UP DOG WASTE
West Stockwith Parish Council has asked its contractor to mow the top of the river bank – but it’s not nice for them, or walkers, to encounter dog waste. So please pick up after your dog and deposit the bag in one of the bins around the village.
VILLAGE HALL FOR HIRE
The Parish Council took over running the Village Hall and is now looking for people to hold events there. This will help ensure the Village Hall’s future. It comes with a well-equipped kitchen, a spacious hall with a stage, and WCs. If interested, contact Cllr Sue Harford on (01427) 890294.
● Look out for the dates of a regular coffee morning, held in the Village Hall to raise funds for its upkeep.
