Breast screening saves lives
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re encouraging women aged 50 – 70 to take up their breast screening invitation.
Screening finds breast cancers at an early stage when they are too small to see or feel. Screening saves about 1,300 lives from breast cancer each year in the UK. The breast screening test is a mammogram, which is done by a female mammographer at a clinic or mobile breast screening unit.
Women receive their first invite between ages 50 to 53 and are then offered screening every three years until age 71. Women aged 71 or over can self-refer every three years.

NHS Flu Programme & Covid Booster
The NHS flu programme invites everyone aged over 65, pregnant women, carers and those with certain medical conditions, for a flu vaccination through their GP surgery or community pharmacy. People over 50 will also be eligible later in the flu season.
Children aged two and three will be invited for a vaccination at their GP surgery. School-aged children up to year nine will also be vaccinated in school, including children and young people in special schools. Children in school years 10 and 11 will be offered a vaccination once an offer has been made to younger children and subject to vaccine availability.
Schools will issue an electronic consent form to parents and carers to make the process easier. If children miss their vaccination at school or if they are home educated, they will be contacted and offered alternative arrangements.
Flu can be an unpleasant illness for most, but in vulnerable groups it can cause severe illness, complications and potentially death. A flu vaccine offers the best protection against catching flu.
If you work with eligible people, it is important that you encourage them to take up the flu vaccination offer when invited. Similarly, if you are eligible as a worker or carer please take up the offer as soon as possible and help protect yourself, your family and those you support.
For more information about the flu vaccine and what to do if you think you may have flu visit the nhs.uk website.
The NHS ‘autumn booster’ COVID-19 vaccination programme has also now launched. The vaccine that will be used this autumn offers protection against both the original virus and the Omicron variant.
Frontline health and social care workers, people aged 65 or over, people who are pregnant, carers aged 16 and over, and people aged 5 or over who are at high risk or live with someone who is at high risk can book an appointment now. People aged 50 or over will also be offered a booster dose between September and December. You can find further information including eligibility criteria and how to book on the NHS website.
Citizens' Panel - How to get involved (Nottingham City)
A new Citizens’ Panel, aimed at engaging members of the public in the future of local health and wellbeing services, is being launched by NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Initially recruiting from people living within the Nottingham City area, the Panel will be an important opportunity for people to have their say on a wide range of health and care topics, helping NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire plan for future services.
The Citizens’ Panel will primarily be online, and will consist of quick and easy surveys, polls and questionnaires throughout the year. It will complement other existing public engagement activity run by NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
How you can get involved, If you live in Nottingham City and are aged 16+ we want to hear your views. Join the panel here: Have your say – Join the Nottingham Citizens’ Panel (office.com)
