Who we are looking for: We are looking for volunteers to go into schools in Worksop/Retford and surrounding areas one morning or afternoon each week in term time. You will read, talk, play games and have a fun time with your selected children on a one-to-one basis away from the classroom, to develop the children's confidence/self esteem whilst helping them to enjoy reading and communicating, resulting in an improvement in their literacy skills.
Volunteer requirements:
A good level of English - equivalent to a Level One Basic Skills in Literacy. (No formal qualifications are required)
To like children, enjoy reading, be flexible and reliable, be a good listener, be patient and encouraging and be able to work with children at their own pace.
You will be vetted through the Disclosure and Barring Service and the appropriate level of suitability checks will be made.
Training and Support:
All volunteers complete two Literacy Volunteer training sessions (Session 1 via zoom, Session 2 face to face) and online certificated safeguarding and prevent training courses prior to being placed in a school.
Although Volunteers work solo in schools with the children they help but as a Volunteer you are not on your own - we hold Volunteer Network Meetings where you can meet other Volunteers and exchange tips, etc. and you are supported by a Volunteer/Schools Co-ordinator who you can call and email and will visit you in school at least once per term.

Support for volunteers with additional needs: During the Literacy Volunteers interview process ,volunteers are asked if they have any additional needs and how these would need to be catered for during their school sessions.

Support Available: Volunteer assigned to named Literacy Volunteers Area Volunteer and Schools Co-ordinator who they can call or email.
