LAST CALL – MISTERTON SENIOR CITIZEN’S ANNUAL LUNCH

Now is the last chance to sign up for the lunch and entertainment put on for those of pensionable age and above in Misterton is on Saturday 13 January at 1.30pm (doors open at 1.00pm) in the Methodist Hall. Those who have been before will automatically get an invitation. If you’re newly retired or new to the village, contact Nikki on 891679 for an invitation and details. After lunch, there’s entertainment by a local contemporary singer. The lunch and entertainment are free, supported by grants from Misterton Parish Council, Bassetlaw District Council, and Notts County Council.

HOSPITALS ENACT ‘WINTER PLAN’

NHS managers at Bassetlaw and Doncaster hospitals have put in place their winter plan. It is in the early weeks of the new year that hospitals are at their busiest. And the six-day strike by junior doctors (Wednesday 3 to Tuesday 9 January) has put at risk plans to cope with the winter surge in emergency activity and cut local NHS waiting lists. The strike means that much routine care was stopped, with consultants doing the work of junior doctors.

Added to this, with around 99% bed occupancy, there is just a handful of beds available for admissions. So patients are asked to use A&E Departments at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital only in an emergency. Unless patients have a life-threatening emergency, there are lots of other services available:

  • local pharmacy (chemist)
  • NHS 111, a 24/7 service phone service
  • Minor Injuries Unit at Montagu Hospital, open every day from 9.00am to 9.00pm
  • local support in Bassetlaw – Bassetlaw Community & Voluntary Service has a useful guide on local support this winter, including food banks, support for the vulnerable, and warm spaces. Go to www.bcvs.org.uk or call 01909 476118.

MISTERTON’S BIG GARDEN BIRD WATCH

With numbers of British birds falling, there’s no better time to see how they’re doing in our area. Between 26 and 28 January, choose just one hour to record the birds that land in your garden. Record the highest number of each bird species at any one time. Go to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) website to sign up. Those who do, get an exclusive RSPB shop discount and a free digital or printed Birdwatch guide (www.rspb.org.uk).

Nationally, over 500,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch last year, counting 9.1m birds. House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts of these were down by 57% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979.

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:

  • community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
  • housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
  • a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
  • the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, BAC is looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.
