FEMALE FIREFIGHTER CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY (+ pic)
Local farmer, Ella White, has been a firefighter in Misterton for almost six years and has brought a multitude of talents. She juggles her on-call commitments with full-time farming and is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to all things agricultural. Being in a rural area is a great asset to a station like Misterton. Ella originally joined the service to learn some new skills, and, like most on-call firefighters, a desire to give back to her local community, both of which she has achieved. Her organisational skills have come in handy, too.
Misterton Fire Station’s recruitment drive is live so, if like Ella, you've got existing skills to share, or want to learn some new ones, get an application in. Notts Fire & Rescue Service is looking for people, who want to make a difference in their community. Visit the online careers page (www.notts-fire.gov.uk) to see the type of activities firefighters could expect to be involved in, and further details about the recruitment process. Applications close at midnight on Tuesday 1 April 2025.
COUNTY COUNCIL’S PLANS FOR OLD SCHOOL SITE
Misterton Parish Council invited Notts County Council’s cabinet member for Property & Asset Management, Cllr Keith Girling, to its March meeting to hear his views on the future of the former school site in the heart of the village. Although the County Council owns the site, parts have fallen into serious disrepair over many years. Cllr Girling was unequivocal in his views: the Grade 2 listed site will be sold and the services there, including the youth club and the Library, will be provided elsewhere in the village. He expects to receive the relevant reports and make a final decision within the next month.
Members of Misterton Parish Council were left ‘gob-smacked’ at his plans, which had not been discussed with the Parish Council beforehand despite it having an office there and with responsibility for recruiting and managing the volunteers that run the Library. The Parish Council, and its Capital Projects Working Group, will consider the impact of possible loss of this facility in the heart of the village at future meetings.
NOMINATE A VILLAGE CHAMPION
Misterton Parish Council is seeking nominations for the Village Champion awards in recognition of local people who have made a voluntary (non-commercial) contribution to the community or where they have provided help to someone that is ‘beyond the call of duty’. There are two awards: seniors (over 18) and juniors (under 18).
Nominate someone you know but make sure they are happy to be nominated!
Nominations together with a brief summary of your reasons for nomination should be sent to: Angela Harrison, Clerk to the Parish Council, The Misterton Centre & Library, 52 High Street, Misterton DN10 4BU. Or e-mail: theclerk@misterton-notts-pc.gov.uk. The closing date for nominations is 5.00pm on Monday 31 March 2025. Awards will be presented at the family fun day on Sunday 4 May.
ARE YOU STRUGGLING FINANCIALLY?
The Goodwin Trust may be able to help. It is committed to helping individuals and families facing financial hardship’ the Trust provides assistance to anyone in need (there’s no age limit) and provides grants for a variety of uses, including mobility scooters, stair lifts, and white goods. Roof repairs, funeral costs, and bathroom alterations have also been funded previously. The Trust will also consider applications for temporary hardship, such as after fire, theft, flooding, or loss of employment. In exceptional cases, trustees may also provide a grant to cover the special needs of people with long-term illness. For instance, this could include patients receiving dialysis while on holiday. The Trust covers the villages of the former East Retford Rural District Council - full details of the local villages covered are provided with the application form. Included are residents of 44 parishes in Bassetlaw but not the towns of Retford, Worksop, and Harworth.
Call 01909 239911 or e-mail goodwincharity@outlook.com for further details or an application form. All inquiries are confidential. Grants cannot be made for work already done or items already bought.
