MISTERTON PUPILS HAVE NEW ‘HEALTH SCHOOL’

Misterton pupils attending Retford Oaks Academy now have special access to a Foundation School in Health - a partnership between the school and Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), which intends to develop opportunities and widen participation for pupils from the Bassetlaw area wishing to pursue a career in the health and care services.

The partnership will see an increased involvement from the health and care workforce at the school, work experience and internship opportunities for pupils, as well as the appointment of ‘DBTH Career Champions’ within the Trust to support the range of proposed activities. There are some 250 different jobs and professions in local hospitals; the Foundation School will enable pupils to explore a range of career options.

VILLAGE HARVEST FESTIVAL

Misterton Parish Church’s Harvest Festival is on Sunday 23 October at 11.00am. It is also when the Parish Church will celebrate its Patronal Festival – its birthday. Birthday cake will be served after the service. All are welcome and harvest gifts will again go to Bassetlaw Food Bank.

HELP WITH COST OF LIVING

A new publication lists over 70 organisations that can help with the cost of living: from money and finance to energy and fuel. The booklet is available in Misterton Library or online at www.bcvs.org.uk/costofliving. Produced by Bassetlaw District Council and Bassetlaw Community & Voluntary Service it aims to ensure that everyone in Misterton knows where and how to access the help and support they need that’s available in this area.

BASSETLAW ACTION CENTRE: UPDATE

Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) is continuing to provide:

  • community transport for essential journeys – health appointments and shopping, for example
  • housing advice services, which are telephone-based primarily but face-to-face appointments are also available
  • a menu of Befriending services – including group befriending, telephone befriending, face to face and peer befriending
  • the Staying Well Programme (6-week self-management course for people with a long-term condition) available both virtually and face to face
  • Get Out Get Active (GOGA) service encourages people to become more active and will continue to offer one-to-one support
  • home support service – a domiciliary service to help people who are just starting to struggle at home (this is a paid-for service).
  • minibus trips – including the newly launched lunch club trips.

BAC would like to hear from anyone with a few hours to spare, who would like to volunteer to support the Action Centre to deliver essential services to local older and vulnerable people. In particular, they are looking for more local volunteer drivers to help people to get to health appointments and for shopping. Volunteers are paid 45p per mile for every mile they drive on behalf of the scheme.

For further details on any of the above please contact BAC on 01777 709650 or by e-mail (enquiries@actioncentre.org.ukFurther information can be found on the website: www.bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk.
