COUNCIL TENANTS' CONFERENCE RE-ARRANGED

The annual conference for tenants of the District Council has been re-arranged due to the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and confirmation of the date of the Bank Holiday. The Tenant Conference is now on Wednesday 12 October at Retford Town Hall.

The conference begins at 9.45am then tenants have a chance to meet the Housing team from 10.00am. The Tenant Conference starts at 11.00am; there is a buffet from 12noon.

As in previous years, the Housing Department will give tenants information on the services the District Council provides and an opportunity to speak with the people who provide them. The Annual Report to Tenants will be launched and there is an opportunity to ask any questions tenants may have.

District Cllr Hazel Brand expects to attend. Any tenant without their own transport and who would like to attend should give her a call.

POPULAR HISTORY WALK UNVEILS SOME VILLAGE SECRETS (+ pic)

Saturday 10 September saw the Chesterfield Canal’s Walking Festival begin with a walk from Wharf Bridge to the Parish Church, taking in the historical features on the way. The walk was led by Misterton’s own historian, David Seymour. The 14 walkers heard about the history of the Canal, how and why if follows the route that it does, and the need to build bridges as construction progressed so the regularity of brickworks alongside the Canal. Walkers are pictured at the former school.

With an open day at the Methodist Church, visitors learnt about its history. The walk ended with a look at some poignant gravestones in the churchyard: the deaths of parents and their children are commemorated, possibly dying from a water-borne disease as the practice was to draw drinking water from the Canal.

MISTERTON’S STAINED-GLASS TREASURES

A free talk on the Parish Church’s stained glass revealed the story of the historic windows. The huge east window commemorates the reign of Queen Victoria and, with the recent death of the next female monarch, visitors to the talk observed a minute’s silence. The window is built into tracery that dates from about 1230 and shows the Last Supper. There is a fragment of 15th century Flemish glass, thought to depict St Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln. King Henry II’s interest in Hugh’s work secured his election to the see of Lincoln in 1186. Both as prior and as bishop, Hugh consistently defended the church’s liberties, gaining a remarkable degree of respect from the English monarchy. On his return to a trip to France, he fell ill, died, and was buried in Lincoln Cathedral in 1200.

The Parish Church features a number of windows by Charles Eamer Kempe. His windows feature a small wheatsheaf, making them instantly recognisable. He also worked with Walter Tower, his cousin and heir. So some windows also feature a trademark tower. The east window in the Lady Chapel was installed in 1965 and is by John Piper and his glassmaker, Patrick Reyntiens. They were responsible for the huge Baptistery window in Coventry Cathedral.

SAVE THE DATE – MISTERTON OAP’s LUNCH

The annual lunch and entertainment for Misterton’s senior citizens is on Saturday 14 January 2023 in the Methodist Hall. Last year's lunch was cancelled as so few had responded to say they'd like to attend. So, this year, the volunteer organisers hope that residents will feel able to venture out. Transport is available for those that need it. The event is a thank-you to all those of a certain age, who have contributed to village, regional, and national life. Anyone over the age of 60 is invited. Those who have been before are already on the invitation list. Newcomers to Misterton, who’d like to come to the event, should get in touch with Nikki (tel: 891629) to be added to the list. Further details will follow.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD (AND FAMILY)

Once again, Misterton Parish Church is supporting Operation Christmas Child. The charity invites gifts for children (and families) in the form of a shoebox, covered with Christmas wrapping paper and filled with suitable toys, toiletries, etc. The shoeboxes will be distributed to the poorest people in Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Romania.

There are leaflets about the appeal in the Parish Church (open daily during the period of national mourning following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth, 10.00am - 4.00pm). Donors are asked to include £5 to cover the cost of processing and transportation. All the details are in the literature or go to samaritans-purse.org.uk/occ. So just take a normal-sized shoebox, fill it with toys, personal care items, school supplies, and accessories such as socks, a wind-up torch, jewellery, and watches. Bring the box to the Parish Church (with donation) by 20 October and leave it at the back of the Church. From Misterton, the boxes will be transported to a regional collection point for onwards distribution in November.

CHURCH TO CELEBRATE 300TH ANNIVERSARY

This year sees the Parish Church’s 300th anniversary – and plans are in place for the tercentenary celebrations. If anyone has any historic photographs or documents they could lend, please get in touch with Stephanie Baines, Churchwarden (tel: 07500 043 842).

In 1714, William Huntington, a ship carpenter, bequeathed £740 for the erection of a chapel and 10 almshouses in his shipyard. The Church was built by the executors of his estate costing less than £300 to build, and a main feature inside the Church is a life-size marble monument of William Huntington. From 1722, when the Church was built, until 1896, the minister was appointed as chaplain by the trustees of Huntington’s Charity. The Church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and was consecrated on 30 September 1732 by the Archbishop of York.

DANGER OF TICKS IN LONG GRASS (+ pic)

A resident, who has been bitten by a tick and suffered years of ill-health, has asked that attention is drawn to the presence of ticks in all long grass. Ticks (one is pictured

but they come in different colours) latch onto the skin and feed on your blood. 60% of ticks are infected with Lyme’s Disease, and, as ticks live for 20 to 30 years, this problem is only going to get worse!

When walking through fields, or along the canal bank, it is important to protect yourself by tucking your jeans/trousers into your socks to stop the ticks crawling up inside your leg, If wearing shorts, use a tick repellent spray from all good outdoor camping and walking shops to spray on your legs/clothes. This gives good all-day protection. If you are bitten and the tick wasn't infected, then you shouldn't have more than a pin-prick mark on your skin. But if the tick carries Lyme's Disease then a large bullseye ring will appear. If you find this on your body, seek medical attention immediately, as it is highly important that you receive antibiotics within the first few weeks of being bitten.

Ticks also bite animals so check your dog's hair after walking through long grass!
